The Role
The Principal DevOps Engineer will be the senior technical voice, driving design, architecture, and release strategies—ensuring the team evolves, stays secure, and scales globally.
Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure as Code (IaC):
- Develop and maintain Terraform modules for Azure core services.
- Enforce IaC standards and multi-provider best practices.
- Manage Terraform state efficiently across environments.

Kubernetes & Cloud-Native Platforms:
- Deploy and manage AKS clusters using GitOps.
- Implement Istio service mesh (preference for ambient mode).
- Lead CIS security hardening for AKS and centralise Helm charts for consistency.
- Design multi-tenant AKS architectures, security policies, and observability pipelines.

Networking & Security:
- Design hub VNet architectures with Azure Firewall policies and DNS configurations.
- Build hyper-scale networking security with PIM, RBAC, CI/CD credential management, and compliance-ready setups.
- Apply detection and response tools like Falco, DAPR, and Kyverno for runtime security.

CI/CD & DevOps Automation:
- Modernise CI/CD with reusable workflows, GitHub Actions, and Azure DevOps Pipelines.
- Standardise automation tooling for pipeline migration, versioning, and security scanning.
- Automate onboarding, upgrades, and typo-resilient operations.

Observability & FinOps:
- Set up Loki, Grafana Alloy, and tracing for centralised observability.
- Implement FinOps practices for cost-aware infrastructure and capacity planning.

Developer Experience (DX):
- Build self-service DevOps tools, automated onboarding, and mentor teams on cloud-native architectures.

Enterprise Architectural Best Practices:
- Integrate ArgoCD, Cilium, Argo Rollouts, KEDA, and other enterprise-grade technologies.
- Focus on technical support, roadmap design, and post-production scaling.
The Person
The Principal DevOps Engineer will combine expertise in Azure-scale systems with leadership skills to communicate complex decisions to stakeholders across every level of the organisation.
Core Requirements
- Azure Cloud Platform:
- Experience designing landing zones, multi-subscription architecture, hub-spoke networking.
- Hands-on expertise with Azure Firewall, Front Door, Key Vault, Entra ID, and PIM for governance.
- Kubernetes & AKS:
- Deep production experience managing AKS clusters, network policies, and security compliance (CIS Benchmarks).
- Familiarity with cluster scaling, ingress management, and RBAC at scale.
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC):
- Terraform module authoring, state management, and multi-provider CI/CD integration.
- Proficiency in Helm charts and deploying multi-language apps consistently.
- Service Mesh & Zero Trust:
- Leadership in Istio (preferably ambient mode) or Cilium for traffic management, mTLS, and metadata management.
- GitOps & Continuous Delivery:
- Transition teams to GitOps (ArgoCD) and canary/blue-green deployments (Argo Rollouts).
- CI/CD Pipeline Engineering:
- Strong in GitHub Actions, Azure Pipelines, with experience migrating CI platforms.
- Security & Compliance:
- Shift-left security (image vulnerability scanning, signing, pen-test readiness).
- Usage of HSAs, workload identities, and compliance tools for governance.
- Networking & Linux:
- Deep understanding of Azure networking, advanced routing, and security groups.
- Strong Linux systems management and container optimisation skills.
- Automation & Tooling:
- Proficiency in Bash/Python for automation and tooling design (CLI frameworks like Cobra).
- Architecture & Collaboration:
- Ability to create HLDs, LLDs, and architectural trade-off documents.
- Clear technical communication to developers, stakeholders, and executives.
- Greenfield Leadership:
- Experience designing and deploying production-grade cloud platforms from scratch (preferably with compliance).

Nice-to-Haves (Desirable Skills)
- Go (Golang) for building internal tooling and CLI frameworks.
- KEDA/Karpenter for optimized autoscaling and cluster rightsizing.
- Strong familiarity with Troposphere, CloudFormation, or Vanilla tkinter-driven automation (bonus).
