Principal Cloud Migration Architect (AWS)
Principal Cloud Migration Architect (AWS) (AWS | Kubernetes | Application Modernisation) Location: Remote Contract Rate: £650/day (INSIDE IR35)
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Principal Cloud Migration Architect to lead the architecture and technical design of a large-scale application migration programme within banking/financial services. This senior, hands-on role requires deep expertise in cloud transformation, application modernisation, and container-based platforms within complex enterprise environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the architectural design of a large-scale application migration programme
- Develop migration strategies for migrating legacy monolithic systems to modern microservice-based architectures
- Produce High-Level Designs (HLDs) and Low-Level Designs (LLDs) to drive implementation
- Define AWS-native target-state cloud architectures while ensuring security, scalability, and cost optimisation
- Provide technical leadership across the migration lifecycle (discovery → implementation → transition)
- Collaborate with engineering, DevOps, security, and platform teams to ensure successful delivery
- Align solutions with enterprise governance, standards, and operational requirements
- Evaluate application dependencies, integration patterns, and migration approaches
- Support solution assurance, design reviews, and technical governance activities
- Contribute to cloud cost modelling, optimisation, and commercial decision-making
- Stakeholder engagement: Translate complex technical decisions into clear business outcomes for senior leaders

Essential Experience
- Proven experience leading large-scale enterprise application migration programmes
- Hands-on expertise in migrating monolithic applications to microservices
- Strong AWS architecture & cloud migration track record
- Extensive experience in container-based architectures, including:
- Amazon EKS
- Amazon ECS
- Kubernetes
- Red Hat OpenShift
- Deep understanding of cloud-native principles and modern application design
- Ability to document HLDs & LLDs for complex programmes
- Experience in Agile and DevSecOps environments
- Exceptional technical leadership and stakeholder management skills
Technical Skills
- AWS Cloud Services (core competencies essential)
- Containerisation (EKS/ECS/Kubernetes/OpenShift)
- Microservices Architecture
- CI/CD Pipeline Expertise
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CloudFormation preferred)
- API & Integration Architecture
- Cloud Networking & Identity/Access Management (IAM)
- Security by Design Principles
- FinOps & Cloud Cost Optimisation
- Commercial awareness of cloud investment & business cases
Desirable Experience (Bonus Attributes)
- Familiarity with AWS Kandro/other AI-enabled cloud tooling
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional (or equivalent)
- Background in regulated industries (e.g., Government, Defence, Financial Services, CNI)
- Knowledge of enterprise architecture frameworks (TOGAF)
- Experience in multi-supplier cloud delivery environments
