Principal Configuration Engineer – Integrated Sensing and Protection
Salary & Structure
Salary: £55,000–£65,000
Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework with broad bands. This range reflects the approved grade band for this role, benchmarked against the external market. Exceptions may occur under governance controls to maintain internal equity.
About the Role
Core Impact: What if critical protection ensured every design decision on a complex defence programme stood up to rigorous scrutiny? As a Principal Configuration Engineer within Integrated Sensing and Protection, you will oversee Configuration Management (CM) and Product Data Management (PDM) standards across the full lifecycle, operating at project level in Basildon (hybrid model, with occasional travel).
Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning & Compliance:
- Author and maintain Configuration Management Plans.
- Review and interpret customer CM/PDM requirements.

Technical Implementation:
- Define configuration requirements derived from customer needs, company standards, and design objectives.
- Manage CM activities in the Siemens Teamcenter PDM system.

Major Control Processes:
- Chair and manage Configuration Control Boards (CCBs), including international representation.
- Produce and report CM metrics at project level.

Lifecycle & Audit Oversight:
- Deploy Configuration Verification & Audit (CV&A) activities across all lifecycle phases.
- Maintain Configuration Status Accounting (CSA), including validation, reporting, KPI support, and integration with partners/sub-contractors.

- Knowledge & Guidance:
- Provide CM expertise as a recognised standard across the business, ensuring robust product design and build discipline.
Essential Requirements
League requirements:
- Deep expertise in Configuration Management and Planning aligned with international CM standards.
- Extensive experience in Configuration Identification, Change Management, Status Accounting, Verification & Audit.
- Proven track record in chairing and managing CCBs.
- Strong experience managing CM in a PDM environment, ideally Siemens Teamcenter.
Technical & Professional Skills:
- Ability to derive and implement configuration requirements from customer/ contractual agreements.
- Experience in producing and analysing CM metrics/KPIs.
- Hands-on experience supporting audits, lifecycle reviews, and external stakeholder reporting.
- Proven ability to drive CM at project level while engaging cross-functional teams/Senior Management.
Non-Technical: The most valuable asset is a team attitude & strong willingness to learn. Partial/complementary experience can still meet the ambition.
Security Clearance
This role demands pre-employment screening aligned with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS).
Potential additional National Security Vetting (NSV) requirements may apply, covering:
- Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV) (eligibility under scrutiny).
