Principal Power System Design Engineer – Networks

Department: Networks Status: Permanent (37.5 hours per week) Salary: Competitive and based on experience/qualifications Location: Glasgow or Manchester

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Project Leadership

  • Drive technical project work ensuring successful delivery
  • Manage complex projects from inception to completion
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration with timelines and budget adherence

Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related field
  • Proven network design experience, covering substations, cables, overhead lines, and plant
  • Expertise in load flow, fault-level, voltage/stability/harmonics protection coordination, and EMT assessments
  • Hands-on PowerFactory, IPSA, PSCAD/PSS®E/ETAP or equivalent experience
  • Robust knowledge of transmission/distribution planning & grid connection processes
  • Ability to develop/review designs, single-line diagrams, specifications, and engineering reports
  • Direct experience with FEED/Pre-FEED studies, feasibility studies, or detailed design projects
  • Familiar with GB Grid/Distribution Codes, ENA Engineering Recommendations, or equivalent standards
  • Strong communication aptitude for collaborating with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Self-motivated with a commitment to continuous learning and technical excellence
  • Prior mentoring of junior engineers or small-team leadership

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • Chartering CEng status (or near-charter) eligibility
  • Python programming for design/analysis/automation
  • Knowledge of energy regulation & renewable integration
  • Experience with HV asset management, grid connections, due diligence, or owner’s engineer projects
