Principal Core Infrastructure Engineer
Senior Software Engineer - Distributed Systems Architect (IC4)
Leads the development and beginning of architectural design for scalable, elastic distributed systems, defining and enforcing scalability requirements. Optimizes code and data paths for high-throughput, hyper-scale workloads, leveraging data plane platforms to ensure large-scale retrieval, storage, and processing. Designs fault-tolerant, in-service-upgradable systems with redundancy, replication, failover, and policies for partitions, incorporating load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting to handle network unreliability while maintaining SLOs.
Ensures robust security controls, executes remediation, maintains compliance documentation, and develops automation (Infrastructure as Code) that enables safe patching, updates, and rollbacks within change management plans.
Responsibilities
System Design & Architecture
Scalability & Elasticity
- Lead the development and architecture of scalable distributed systems, ensuring horizontal and vertical scaling through distributed state management tools.
- Optimize systems for high-throughput, large-scale data processing in hyper-scale environments.
- Define and enforce scalability requirements for owned components.
- Design systems to support elastic scaling (vertical and horizontal).
- Leverage data plane platforms for efficient data retrieval, storage, and processing.
- Design and execute performance and load testing for critical systems.
Reliability & Fault Tolerance
- Build fault-tolerant, in-service-upgradable systems using:
- Redundancy, replication, failover
- Handling service disruptions (e.g., network partitions via CAP theorem considerations)
- Implement and optimize load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting for network unreliability.
- Ensure components adhere to SLAs/SLOs for availability and durability.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
