Principal Core Infrastructure Engineer
Senior Scalability & Reliability Engineer
Responsibilities
System Design & Architecture
System Scalability
- Lead the development, implementation, and early architectural design of scalable distributed systems, supporting:
- Horizontal and vertical scaling to meet evolving demands
- Distributed state management tools
- Optimise code and systems for large-scale data processing and high-throughput workloads in hyper-scale environments
- Define and enforce scalability requirements for owned components, ensuring compliance
- Design elastically scalable systems, balancing horizontal (out) and vertical (up) scaling strategies
- Leverage data plane platforms for efficient:
- Large-scale data retrieval
- Storage and processing
- Implement and design performance and load testing frameworks
System Reliability Design
- Architect and build fault-tolerant systems capable of in-service upgrades, incorporating:
- Redundancy, replication, and failover mechanisms
- Resilience to service disruptions (e.g., network partitions)
- Consistency, availability, or partition tolerance based on priorities
- Optimise approaches for handling network unreliability via:
- Load-shedding
- Throttling
- Rate-limiting
- Design systems ensuring SLO adherence and durability, setting expectations for availability/durability across dependent services
System Reliability Performance
- Define KPIs and telemetry to identify bottlenecks, gaps, and inefficiencies
- Build and customise moderately complex dashboards, telemetry systems, and alerting mechanisms to:
- Proactively monitor component and system health
- Detect anomalies and performance degradation
Correctness & Data Integrity
- Design and enforce functional correctness for:
- New feature sets
- Existing systems enhancements
- Develop complex test scenarios, including:
- Fault injection simulations
- Brown-out testing (reduced resource availability)
- Implement data replication and synchronisation techniques to guarantee:
- Data consistency
- Availability under fault conditions

Operational Troubleshooting & Incident Response
- Proactively diagnose, debug, and resolve production issues
- Mentor peers in advanced debugging and root-cause analysis
- Avoid maintenance interruptions by designing zero-downtime optimisations
- Maintain deep expertise in owned systems/components for rapid resolution
- Ensure operational readiness through (reliable design + preemptive troubleshooting)
- Provide guidance and root-cause investigations in operational support rotations
Compliance & Security
- Implement robust security controls, including:
- Data encryption strategies
- Multi-tenant access controls
- Execute remediation plans for security vulnerabilities or gaps
- Ensure cloud compliance with industry standards/regulations, with updated documentation
- Validate infrastructure adherence to compliance protocols
Automation & Change Management
- Develop Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) frameworks to manage cloud infrastructure
- Design patching/update/rollback automation processes
- Create change management plans for paramount operations
- Champion self-service automation for updates/confidential safeguarding

- Manage moderately complex tasks, coordinating timelines, deliverables, and risks
- Prioritise and delegate work across multiple projects, adjusting timelines as required
- Provide technical oversight and mitigate resource/dependency conflicts
Collaboration & Leadership
- Facilitate cross-team alignment on scaling objectives
- Actively incorporate diverse stakeholder perspectives
- Fosters inclusive workflows, ensuring all voices are respected and integrated
Problem Solving
- Resolve complex issues by synthesising data, benchmarking solutions, and reporting insights
- Escalate unresolved/critical issues with actionable recommendations
- Continuously refine and document problem-solving methodologies
