Principal Cyber Researcher – Raytheon UK
Location: Gloucester, South Gloucestershire (Hybrid) Position Type: Permanent
About the Role
Raytheon UK is seeking a Principal Cyber Researcher to join the Cyber Research Group (CRG). This role will focus on cutting-edge research and development across cyber domains, with responsibilities spanning technical investigations, rapid prototyping, and threat discovery.
- The role offers a hybrid working model, based at the Gloucester site.
- Security clearance is required—candidates must be eligible and willing to obtain SC and enhanced DBS checks.
- Part of an organisation delivering DevSecOps-at-scale, AI/ML, cyber, and geospatial intelligence, supporting defence, intelligence, and critical systems.
As a Principal Cyber Researcher, you’ll:
- Lead innovative research to identify emerging threats and vulnerabilities.
- Contribute to CRG’s long-term strategy and operational management.
- Support bidding activities and business development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct deep-dive research in:
- Vulnerability discovery
- Reverse engineering
- Embedded systems compromise
- Design and build rapid prototypes to validate cyber capabilities
- Analyze network protocols and system behaviours to uncover security weaknesses
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver technical solutions
- Document research methodologies, findings, and recommendations for stakeholders
- Manage small research teams, track progress, and report to customers
- Contribute to CRG’s strategic planning and operational management
- Support business development, including proposal writing and technical briefings

Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proficiency in programming (C, C++, or Python)
- Strong knowledge of Linux systems, command-line tools, and networking concepts (TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, HTTP, ICMP)
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Proven analytic & problem-solving skills in a methodical, hands-on tech environment
- Experience in rapid prototyping (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Arduino, virtualisation)
- Track record of managing research projects end-to-end
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Hardware prototyping, PCB design, microcontrollers
- Penetration testing, offensive security tools
- Reverse engineering platforms: Ghidra, IDA Pro, or Binary Ninja
- Vulnerability research & exploit development
- Embedded software (ARM, AVR, PowerPC, MIPS)
- RF systems experience:
- Software-defined radios (GNU Radio, Osmocom, srsRAN, USRP),
- Cellular communications (2G/4G/5G)
- Network engineering skills in home lab or security-focused environments
