Principal Data Architect - National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET)

Role Overview

National Grid is hiring a Principal Data Architect operating under a hybrid working model, based out of the Warwick (UK) office. Hybrid work expectations align with business needs and company policy.

About the Role

The Principal Data Architect is a senior technical leadership role, responsible for:

  • Defining, governing, and evolving the end-to-end data architecture of National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET)
  • Providing the authoritative architectural vision for data structuring, storage, integration, and consumption across:
    • Operations technology (OT) historians and SCADA systems
    • Data Fabric, Data Marketplace, and AI workbenches
  • Supporting NGET’s transition from siloed data warehouses to a Data Mesh model with a data fabric, alongside RIIO-T31 Enabling Data commitments

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Architectural Architecture

  • Act as the senior technical thought leader, mentor, and advocate for Data Architecture and practice within NGET
  • Own and evolve NGET’s data architecture blueprint
  • Ensure coherence across:
    • Fabric
    • Snowflake
    • Azure
    • OT/historian systems
    • Integration platforms (e.g., SnapLogic/iPaaS)

Governance & Decision-Making

  • Govern data architecture decisions across federated domains for:
    • Interoperability
    • Reuse & alignment with Data Mesh principles
  • Reduce technical debt and fragmentation via:
    • Standardised reference architectures
    • Data models
    • Architectural patterns

Regulatory Compliance & Programme Leadership

  • Support NGET’s regulatory obligations under:
    • Ofgem Data Best Practice Guidance
    • Ofgem Digitalisation Strategy & Action Plan
    • National Energy System Operator (NESO) Data Sharing Infrastructure (DSI) readiness
  • Serve as data architecture authority for major programmes:
    • Digital Twins
    • Enabling Data
    • Construction Optimisation
    • AI/ML product delivery

Requirements

Skills & Experience

  • Interest in the built environment and infrastructure
  • Demonstrable experience as a data architect/enterprise data architect in complex, multi-system environments
  • Proven expertise in:
    • Cloud-native data architecture (e.g., Azure Data Lake, Fabric, Lakehouse/mesh patterns)
  • Strong understanding of Data Mesh principles:
    • "Data as a product"
    • Federated ownership
    • Self-serve infrastructure
    • Computational governance
  • Familiarity with:
    • TOGAF
    • Zachman (or comparable frameworks)
    • Information modelling, ontologies, and metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, FAIR data principles)
  • Experience leading architectural governance in large organisations
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills:
    • Influence technical/non-technical audiences up to Director/C-suite levels

  • Competitive salary: Circa £70,000 – £87,000 per annum, based on location, capability, and experience
