The Role
We’re seeking an experienced Principal Designer (PD) to lead the safe, compliant delivery of major projects from inception. This is a senior, high-impact role with clear legal accountability and the opportunity to shape how complex programmes are governed and delivered.
In this position, you will act as the organisation’s trusted PD expert, overseeing health and safety during the pre-construction phase. You’ll bring together designers, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure that projects are fully planned, legally sound, and ready for execution. Your responsibilities will include setting a strategic direction, managing risk, and embedding quality and efficiency across large projects, all while meeting business objectives, budget constraints, and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities

- Compiling, managing, and effectively communicating pre-construction information to ensure clarity and compliance with designers and contractors
- Identifying, eliminating, or controlling health and safety risks through design and strategic planning
- Providing senior leadership across multi-disciplinary, high-scale projects, including managing multiple interdependent workstreams
- Acting as the primary authority on compliance, ensuring adherence to legal frameworks, internal standards, and relevant regulations (e.g., PAS 8671)

- Proactively identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks that may impact programme delivery and success
- Delivering strategic oversight, governance, and accountability to drive successful project outcomes

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
