About the Role
BakerHicks is seeking an experienced Principal Earthing Design Engineer to deliver high-quality earthing solutions for a diverse portfolio of high-voltage (HV) power infrastructure projects. Reporting to the Discipline Lead – HV, this role involves technical leadership, project delivery, and team development within the Power sector.
Primarily based in Leeds with flexible travel as required, the successful candidate will ensure the quality, consistency, and technical excellence of earthing studies, calculations, reports, drawings, and site survey outputs—spanning 11kV to 400kV.
This position offers the chance to shape earthing engineering capabilities at BakerHicks, contributing to high-profile HV substation projects in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
Technical Delivery & Quality Assurance
- Deliver end-to-end earthing design solutions for new-build and refurbishment HV substations, including:
- Primary earthing layouts and earthing connection details
- Single-line diagrams and earthing schematics
- Specifications for Earth Switches, Surge Arrestors, and Disconnectors
- Conduct earthing studies, including:
- Earth Return Current (Igr) calculations
- Earth Potential Rise (EPR) analyses
- Step/Touch potential evaluations
- "Hot" and "Cold" site determination
- Perform CDEGS (Computer Design of Earthing Systems) modelling and high-frequency earthing designs
- Execute impressed voltage studies and lightning risk assessments
- Develop lightning protection concept designs

Documentation & Technical Leadership
- Author technical reports, calculations, and specifications for procurement
- Approve and review engineering deliverables (drawings, reports, studies)
- Support bid and tender activities by providing:
- Technical expertise and design input
- Programme estimates and cost structures
- Contributions to Power Sector growth initiatives
Resource & Project Coordination
- Assist the Discipline Lead – HV with resource planning and forecasting for efficient team utilisation
- Contribute to project execution strategy while ensuring adherence to industry standards and design practices
Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- BEng/BSc in Electrical Engineering, with a focus on Power/HV systems (Preferred: MEng/MEsc in Electrical Engineering)
- Proven experience in earthing design for:
- 11kV to 400kV substations (new-build/refurbishment)
- Primary earthing layouts, CDEGS studies, surge protection solutions
- Certification status: Preference if working towards CEng (not essential but desirable)
Technical Proficiency
Strong understanding of:
- Earthing system design principles
- HV substation standards (GS1, BS7430, IEEE, etc.)
- Software tools: CDEGS, AutoCAD/ETAP, and equivalents
Soft Skills & Mindset
- Self-motivated and proactive, with independent problem-solving abilities
- Ownership-driven mentality, fostering collaborative yet high-autonomy work style
- Ability to deliver high-quality design under tight schedules
