Assystem: Principal EC&I Engineer / Protection Engineer (UK Location)

👷 The Role: Principal EC&I Engineer / Protection Engineer

What You’ll Lead & Deliver

Drive and oversee end-to-end EC&I (Electrical, Control & Instrumentation) engineering to advance energy and industrial projects across their life cycle.

  • 🛠️ Technical Leadership:
    • Guide multidisciplinary EC&I engineering teams in delivering innovative, high-integrity solutions for large-scale projects.
    • Develop and continuously update the project ETAP (electrical simulation) model.
    • Conduct fault calculations and produce protection reports and arc flash risk assessments.
  • 📋 Design Expertise:
    • Focus on power and protection systems, primarily 11kV & 400V challenges, with specific responsibility for unit protection calculations (differential/high-impedance schemes).
    • Lead updates to Sellafield’s engineering standards and best practices.
  • 👥 Collaboration & Mentorship:
    • Work closely with the design team, stalks “RMCs” optimisation and Health & Safety integration.
    • Mentor engineers, set performance objectives, and cultivate a collaborative, high-performance culture.
  • 📐 Project & Client Management:
    • Work as Lead Engineer, authoring design reviews, technical reports, and formal evaluations.
    • Serve as the primary technical contact for clients, coordinating schedules and stay within budget.
  • 💰 Optimisation & Compliance:
    • Align projects with deadlines while prioritising safety, environmental compliance, and cost-effectiveness.

Who You’ll Work With

  • Project Managers at Assystem and external contractors.
  • Sellafield’s engineering teams, particularly during electrical infrastructure upgrades.
  • Regulatory assessments requiring BS EN 60909 fault calculation standards.

🔧 Qualifications & Experience

🎓 Essentials

  • Degree Qualification:
    • Bachelor’s/RNAM in Electrical, Instrumentation, or Control Engineering (or HNC/HND with substantial professional experience in above areas).
  • Technical Proficiencies:
    • Expertise in BS EN 60909 Fault Calculations.
    • Hands-on knowledge of protection and control systems for 11kV & 400V networks.
    • Experience in substation design, particularly for legacy assets and upgrades.
    • Unit protection mechanisms mastery (differential schemes, high-impedance).
  • Knowledge:
    • Safety protocols specific to Sellafield’s UK-based electrical operations.

🚀 Desirables

  • Technical:
    • Experience with Sellafield’s design processes and internal standards.
    • Familiarity with CAD tools (Trimble, ERACS, PowerStudio).
    • Prior experience with IEC61850 or SCADA systems in industrial or energy projects.
    • Ongoing work towards Chartered Engineer status (see Forums, Institution of Engineering and Technology).
  • Qualifications:
    • Honours degree or postgraduate certification in relevant engineering discipline not mandatory but beneficial.

⚖️ Security Clearance (Mandatory)

Potential candidates must have or obtain:

  • UK Security Check (SC clearance) without caveats.
  • Must be a UK national (or dual national from a UK-MoD-approved non-ITAR country).
