The Role: Principal EC&I Engineer / Protection Engineer
🌟 Core Responsibilities
**🎯 Lead & Innovate: Technical & Team Leadership
- Guide EC&I (Electrical, Control & Instrumentation) engineering teams in delivering high-impact, innovative solutions for complex projects.
- Mentor and support individuals, setting clear goals and fostering a collaborative, high-performance environment.
📊 Model & Analyze: Electrical Engineering Expertise
- Create and update the digital ETAP model for projects—ensuring technical robustness and project alignment.
- Conduct fault calculations (per BS EN 60909) for electrical infrastructure.
- Produce technical reports and arc flash risk assessments.
🛠️ Design & Standards: Substation & Protection Specialism
- Oversee 11kV & 400V substation design. Expertise in unit protection systems, including:
- Differential protection schemes
- High-impedance relays
- Drive continual improvement by contributing to Sellafield’s engineering standards and industry best practices.

📋 Risk & Compliance: H&S & Environmental Focus
- Plan and prioritise tasks while ensuring alignment with Health & Safety (H&S), environmental regulations, and project deadlines.
⚡ Design & Technical Reviews
- Chair design review meetings, facilitate technical discussions, and lead formal evaluations as the Lead Engineer.
📈 Budget & Project Oversight
- Collaborate with Project Managers to minimise costs, delays, and conflicts while remaining within programme deadlines.
🧩 Client Liaison & Cross-Functional Coordination
- Serve as the primary technical contact for clients, facilitating seamless delivery across all project phases.
Requirements
✅ Essential Qualifications
🎓 Professional Degree or Equivalent Experience
- A degree in Electrical, Instrumentation or Control Engineering (or equivalent HNC/HND with substantial professional experience).
- Desirable: Honours-level or advanced degree in a relevant electrical discipline.
🔧 Technical Expertise
- Thorough knowledge of:
- BS EN 60909 (Fault Calculations standards).
- Power distribution modelling software (e.g., ETAP, DigSilent).
- Protection and control systems for 11kV/400V networks.
- 11kV & 400V substation design experience (upgrades, retrofits, or proprietary technologies).
- Unit protection calculations (including differential and high-impedance schemes).
🏗️ Sector-Specific Knowledge
- Experience with Sellafield Distribution Network, its electrical safety protocols, and legacy infrastructure.
- Familiarity with nuclear or decommissioning engineering best practices (radioactive/flammable environments).

🇬🇧 Security Clearance
- Essential: Valid Safety Check (SC) clearance (no caveats).
- Critical: UK national or dual national with UK MoD approval from a non-ITAR country.
📚 Desire for Chartership
- Preference for candidates already Chartered (or on-track to IEng/CEng registration).
💼 Desirable Experience
- Sellafield’s design processes, especially for nuclear facilities.
- Additional software stack (e.g., Trimble TCS NAAP, ERACs, SCADA, IEC61850 for substation automation).
