Principal Ecological Consultant – London
About the Role
LUC’s ecology team is passionate about creating opportunities for wildlife and people to thrive together.
With established teams in London, Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester, Sheffield, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, we support a wide range of projects—both local and national. We’re enthusiastic about finding new ways to apply emerging ecological principles and methods to tackle the most challenging policy and development projects, fostering collaboration and fun along the way.
We’re currently driving some of the UK’s most exciting projects in consultancy. From energy generation to historic building restoration, regenerative agriculture, to strategic biodiversity enhancement plans, our mission is clear: to deliver better futures for nature, people, and place.
We’re seeking a Principal Ecological Consultant to join our thriving London team, helping us deliver our renewable energy generation and transmission portfolio, while also contributing to broader development and nature restoration projects across south east England.
Responsibilities
The role includes:
- Preparing tender responses and fee proposals
- Designing, overseeing, and delivering ecological surveys
- Managing projects using LUC’s internal Project Management System
- Engaging with project clients and stakeholders
- Analysing and interpreting ecological data
- Producing consultancy reports
- Line managing junior colleagues
- Supporting business development activities
- Collaborating with wider teams, including those specialising in:
- Strategic Ecology
- Arboriculture
- Agri-environment
- Landscape Architecture
- Planning
- Heritage
- GIS and Visualisation

Model of Work
- Location: Office-based in London (minimum two days per week)
- Travel: Required to visit project sites, client offices, or other office locations
- Flexibility: Part-time options (minimum 30 hours per week) available, with a reputation for a forward-thinking flexible working culture
- Employee Ownership: Opportunity to actively participate in business ownership via the Employee Ownership Trust
- Hours: Full-time role is 37.5 hours/week (Mon–Fri)
Compensation
- Salary: £39,000–£47,400 FTE (plus £4,000 London allowance)
Requirements for Success
Essential
- Strong understanding of UK wildlife, with further/higher education or practical experience to demonstrate credibility
- Comprehensive knowledge of UK nature conservation legislation and policy
- Familiarity with the development management process in England and Wales
- Extensive experience in:
- Survey and monitoring of habitats and protected species, including:
- Survey design
- Data management
- Statistical analysis
- Survey and monitoring of habitats and protected species, including:
- Experience with preparation or review of reports, including:
- Preliminary ecological appraisals
- Protected species survey reports
- Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs)
- Demonstrated ability to engage and collaborate effectively with clients and stakeholders
- Experience with line management responsibilities
- Valid UK driving licence
- Willingness to:
- Travel across the UK (expenses covered)
- Occasionally work antisocial hours, particularly during bat survey season (night work may be required)

Desirable
- Understanding of renewable energy consenting mechanisms
- HND, degree, or qualification: Preferred but not mandatory if offset by impressive experience
