Principal EICA Design Engineer (Water Sector)

About the Role

Our Regulated Water Asset Design team serves the municipal water sector both in the UK and internationally. We hold long-term framework agreements directly with water companies, including:

  • Severn Trent Water
  • Southwest Water

Additionally, we maintain excellent relationship and trading agreements with blue-chip contractors, including:

  • Costain
  • Galliford Try

We deliver a full range of design services across:

  • Wastewater treatment
  • Water treatment
  • Sewerage
  • Water network schemes

Due to a significant increase in demand for our services, we are actively recruiting Senior and Principal Electrical, Instrumentation, Control & Automation Engineers (EICA) to support the AMP8 water sector capital investment programme.


Key Responsibilities

You will be an integral member of the Water Engineering team, working independently and collaboratively to design and deliver technical solutions across various projects. Key responsibilities include:

  • Deliver EICA design inputs for infrastructure-related projects
  • Prepare or review EICA package deliverables, including:
    • Technical specifications
    • Calculations
    • Reports
    • Datasheets
    • Schedules
    • Control philosophies
    • User requirement specifications
    • Network architecture drawings
  • Review and execute tender evaluations
  • Participate in:
    • Proposals
    • Scoping of work
    • Identifying key tasks and packages
    • Developing resourcing/time estimates
  • Ensure compliance with DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) and elevated EICA equipment risks
  • Manage inspection, testing, setting to work, and commissioning stages for ICA equipment and installations
  • Attend factory acceptance tests for:
    • Panel fabrication
    • PLC/HMI software
    • SCADA systems
  • Coach and mentor ICA discipline junior staff

What We Will Be Looking For

Essential Requirements

  • Degree qualification (IET-accredited) in electrical or control engineering, or a minimum electrical/control HND with substantial experience
  • Professional registration with the Engineering Council as a:
    • Chartered Engineer (CEng)
    • Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
  • Extensive experience in EICA engineering design for water infrastructure, including:
    • Preparing and reviewing deliverables (technical specs, calculations, datasheets, schedules, control philosophies, user requirement specs, and networks)
  • Specialist knowledge of:
    • DSEAR (explosive atmospheres)
    • Electrical equipment hazards
    • CDM regulations for installations
  • Strong client-facing skills, including:
    • Diligence, collaboration, and motivation
    • Ability to work independently or with teams/clients
  • Willingness to travel (contractor/operational sites) for:
    • surveys
    • inspections
    • testing
  • Practical understanding of electrical safe systems of work
