Principal Electrical Design Engineer & Team Lead – Building Services Consultancy

Lead technical excellence, mentor engineering talent, and deliver sustainable building services solutions across high-profile projects.

Hybrid – Brierley Hill, West Midlands | Minimum two office days per week

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and commercially aware Principal Electrical Design Engineer & Team Lead to lead an Electrical Design Team and deliver high-quality building services engineering solutions across a diverse portfolio of projects. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a technically strong electrical building services professional who can provide strategic direction, oversee project delivery, and develop engineering talent within a multidisciplinary MEP consultancy environment. You will act as the technical authority for electrical engineering projects, managing delivery from feasibility through to construction and handover while ensuring the highest standards of quality, compliance, and client satisfaction.

The Role

As the Principal Electrical Design Engineer & Team Lead, you will be responsible for leading electrical design activities, mentoring engineers, managing client relationships, and driving successful project outcomes across multiple sectors. You will:

  • Lead the design, specification, and delivery of electrical building services projects across all RIBA stages.
  • Act as the principal technical authority for electrical engineering within the business.
  • Review and sign off engineering calculations, specifications, drawings, and technical reports.
  • Design and oversee LV power distribution, lighting, emergency lighting, fire alarms, security systems, data infrastructure, renewable energy systems, and EV charging solutions.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring delivery to programme, budget, and quality standards.
  • Lead client, contractor, design team, and site meetings.
  • Conduct site surveys, inspections, commissioning reviews, and technical assessments.
  • Prepare feasibility studies, due diligence reports, and option appraisals.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop Electrical Engineers, Senior Engineers, Graduates, and Apprentices.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, succession planning, and team development initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat business and support business growth activities.
  • Drive innovation, sustainability, and net-zero design principles across projects.

What We're Looking For

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution such as IET, CIBSE, or equivalent.
  • Significant experience within a Building Services or MEP Consultancy environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of electrical building services design and installations.
  • Detailed understanding of BS 7671 and relevant electrical standards.
  • Experience leading electrical design projects from concept through completion.
  • Proven people leadership and team management experience.
  • Strong client-facing, stakeholder management, and communication skills.
  • Experience producing and reviewing electrical calculations and specifications.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy, decarbonisation, and energy efficiency projects.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • Commercial awareness and project financial management capability.

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards chartership.
  • Experience within healthcare, education, commercial, industrial, or public sector projects.
  • Business development, bid support, and framework application experience.
  • Departmental budgeting and resource planning experience.
  • Understanding of mechanical building services coordination requirements.
