About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer to lead electrical engineering solutions across a diverse portfolio of built environment projects within Scotland and the UK.

You will join our Electrical team at our Glasgow or Edinburgh office, with the flexibility to collaborate across both bases.

What You’ll Do

The Principal Electrical Engineer role demands technical leadership, with end-to-end design responsibility for complex projects. Your tasks will include:

  • Leading design delivery for significant and multidisciplinary projects
  • Defining design aims aligned with client requirements and technical objectives
  • Representing Hoare Lea at client and project meetings, advocating for our expertise
  • Overseeing and coordinating internal project teams, ensuring efficient supply chain engagement
  • Delegating, reviewing, and quality-checking design work executed by juniors
  • Inspiring team development through mentoring and guidance
  • Budget monitoring and cost control, aligning financial performance with project goals
  • Identifying, mitigating risks, and advocating procurement best practices
  • Ensuring deliverables meet technical accuracy, industry standards, and programme deadlines
  • Sharing technical expertise within the firm and contributing to integrated design solutions
  • Effective communication, internally and with clients, across all client-facing interactions

About You

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Chartered Engineer (or eligible for registration)
  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience in electrical/building services design aligned with UK regulations and design standards
  • Strong grasp of multidisciplinary collaboration in integrated project delivery
  • Outstanding client management skills, including expertise in professionalism under pressure
  • Demonstratable experience leading design teams through complex projects and adhering to critical timelines
  • Commercial acumen, including experience in budget tracking, risk identification, and professionally sustainable delivery
  • Robust organizational and time-management skills, capable of handling multiple demands
  • Clarity and confidence in technical communication (both spoken and written form), with external consultancy experience
  • Proficiency in industry-standard software (Revit, AutoCAD, Dialux, OM Electrical)
  • Commitment to lifelong professional development, including mentoring others
