Principal Mechanical Engineer
Birmingham | Building Services Consultancy | Leadership Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join a growing building services consultancy in Birmingham.
With over 25 years of experience delivering innovative building services solutions, this independent consultancy has established an excellent reputation across the healthcare, commercial, education, residential, life sciences, leisure, and public sectors. The business is recognised for its collaborative approach, technical excellence, and commitment to delivering sustainable, low-carbon engineering solutions.
The Birmingham office is entering a significant growth phase, with plans to double its headcount over the next two years. This creates an outstanding opportunity for an experienced engineer to play a key role in shaping the future of the office, leading projects, developing clients, and mentoring the next generation of engineers.
The Role
As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will take a leading role in the delivery of mechanical building services projects from concept through to completion. You will provide technical leadership, manage client relationships, and support the continued growth of the Birmingham office.
Working closely with senior leadership, you will help drive project delivery, develop junior engineers, and contribute to business development activities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the mechanical design and delivery of projects across multiple sectors.
- Managing projects through all RIBA stages.
- Acting as the primary point of contact for clients and design teams.
- Providing technical leadership and quality assurance across project teams.
- Mentoring and developing junior and intermediate engineers.
- Coordinating with electrical, sustainability, and BIM teams.
- Supporting business development and helping to strengthen existing client relationships.
- Contributing to resource planning and the continued growth of the Birmingham office.
- Driving low-carbon, energy-efficient, and sustainable design solutions.

About You
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Extensive experience within a building services consultancy environment.
- A degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering.
- Chartered status, or be working towards Chartership through CIBSE or IMechE.
- Proven experience leading mechanical building services projects.
- Strong technical knowledge of HVAC and building services design.
- Experience managing client relationships and multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- A commercial mindset and an interest in helping grow a developing office.
