The Role
About the Position
We’re seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to lead and deliver electrical and ICA (Instrumentation, Control, and Automation) design for water and wastewater projects in Scotland. In this high-impact leadership role, you’ll:
- Steer transformational projects under Scotland Water’s SR27 infrastructure revolution.
- Support Scotland’s green transition with digitally advanced, cost-, and client-focused solutions.
- Inspire and mentor direct reports while maintaining cutting-edge expertise in electrical engineering for water treatment.
Location & Flexibility This role is based in there are multiple Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, or Perth offices, with flexibility under AECOM’s hybrid working model.
Responsibilities
The Principal Electrical Engineer will be responsible for:
Engineering Leadership & Delivery
- Design and review electrical and ICA systems for water/wastewater infrastructure projects, including treatment plants and network upgrades.
- Deliver from feasibility studies through construction/commissioning support – balancing technical rigour, efficiency, and client advocacy.
- Lead bid responses and defend technical excellence, ensuring AECOM maintains its preferred bidder status for major UK projects (e.g., Scottish Water).

Project Management & Accountability
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and deliverables, ensuring quality and timelines align with targets.
- Clientele engagement: Pivot between motivational project populism and court-share governance meetings to shape collaborations.
Collaboration & Innovation
- Work within multidisciplinary teams, championing knowledge sharing across civil, mechanical, and process engineers.
- Foster inclusive, innovative solutions, contributing to AECOM’s technical benchmarks and long-term strategy.
- Stakeholder buy-in: Tactfully presenting options, securing recommendations, and driving consensus.
Mentorship & Growth
- Lead and develop direct reports (emerging engineers), nurturing the next generation of electrical designers.
- Cultivate an organisational mind-set for design for manufacture and operation (DfMO) aligned with client needs.
Requirements
Experience & Qualifications
- BEng or MEng in Electrical Engineering, with specialisation in water/wastewater or healthcare/commercial applications.
- Chartered Engineer (MICE, MCIBSE, or equivalent) membership/eligibility.
- 10+ years’ proven experience in designing, reviewing, and approving electrical and ICA systems for water infrastructure.
- A sleek confident thinker, comfortable vying with outSize to provide clear resolutions to bases arising from conflicting technical and commercial expectations.
- Business cultivation: Proven track-right in client work and building strong accountability dimensions with stakeholders.
Attitude and mindset
- Confident in rigour if taking ownership of complex trouble tickless discussions and accepting technical responsibility.
