Location: Knutsford, South Manchester (on-site 2-3 days per week)

Our client, a leading banking institution, is hiring a hands-on Principal Engineer to drive a strategic technology transformation. This role is perfect for an experienced backend engineer with deep expertise in workflow orchestration platforms like Camunda and/or Temporal.io, and a passion for building resilient, scalable enterprise systems.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead technical evaluation and comparison of Camunda vs Temporal.io
  • Design scalable patterns and reference architectures for enterprise workflow orchestration
  • Drive modern backend engineering standards, including CI/CD, deployment automation, and operational best practices
  • Architect durable, fault-tolerant distributed systems with high observability
  • Develop integration strategies across enterprise APIs, event streams, and downstream systems
  • Build reusable frameworks, prototypes, and production solutions independently
  • Guide engineering teams on orchestration, system resilience, and operational excellence
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define scalable technology roadmaps
  • Contribute to AI-enabled software initiatives using LLM frameworks and AWS AI services

What You'll Bring

  • Proven experience with Camunda and/or Temporal.io in backend and distributed systems
  • Strong Python skills and experience designing production-grade APIs
  • Expertise in building resilient, fault-tolerant enterprise applications
  • Knowledge of workflow orchestration, retries, state management, and failure handling
  • Experience with APIs, messaging, microservices, and event-driven architectures
  • Hands-on experience with LangChain, LangGraph, LangSmith, and AI-powered workflows
  • Familiarity with AWS Bedrock, AWS AgentCore, serverless, and container deployments (preferred)
  • Ability to evaluate technologies independently and influence engineering standards
  • Strong stakeholder management and mentoring skills
