About the Company
We are looking to appoint an experienced and technically strong Principal Engineer to join our team in Sheffield. This is a senior engineering position offering the opportunity to play a key role in the delivery of technically challenging projects while supporting the continued growth and development of the engineering function.
About the Role
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across projects, act as a senior point of contact for clients and stakeholders, and work closely with engineering and project delivery teams to ensure high-quality outcomes. A key part of the role will be capacity building across the wider engineering function. This will include mentoring and developing engineers, strengthening technical capability, sharing knowledge and best practice, and helping to build a resilient and high-performing engineering team capable of supporting the company's future growth.
Responsibilities
- Provide senior technical leadership across a range of engineering projects.
- Lead and oversee engineering activities from concept and design through to project delivery and completion.
- Develop, review and approve engineering designs, calculations, specifications and technical documentation.
- Act as a technical authority, providing expert guidance and solutions to complex engineering challenges.
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, clients, consultants and other stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
- Ensure all engineering work is completed to the required technical, quality, safety and regulatory standards.
- Review technical deliverables and provide constructive feedback to ensure high standards are maintained.
- Identify and manage technical risks, challenges and opportunities throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide technical input into tenders, proposals, feasibility studies and business development opportunities.
- Support the development and implementation of engineering processes, standards and best practice.
- Lead and contribute to technical reviews, design meetings and client presentations.
- Mentor, coach and support engineers and other technical staff, helping to develop their skills and professional capabilities.
- Play a key role in capacity building, developing internal engineering expertise and supporting the recruitment, training and development of technical resources.
- Promote knowledge sharing and continuous professional development across the engineering team.
- Help establish a strong technical culture focused on collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.
- Support workforce planning to ensure the engineering team has the capability and resources required to meet current and future project demands.
- Work collaboratively across disciplines to ensure effective integration of engineering activities and project requirements.

Qualifications
- Significant experience within a senior engineering role, ideally at Principal Engineer level or equivalent.
- Strong technical background within mechanical engineering or a relevant engineering discipline.
- Proven experience delivering complex engineering projects.
- Experience providing technical leadership and guidance to engineering teams.
- Strong understanding of engineering standards, specifications and regulatory requirements.
- Experience reviewing and approving engineering designs and technical documentation.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience mentoring, coaching and developing engineers.
- Demonstrable experience supporting capacity building and the development of engineering capability.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a project-driven environment.

Required Skills
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration.
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant discipline.
- Experience working within industrial, infrastructure, manufacturing or complex engineering environments.
- Experience contributing to bids, tenders and business development activities.
- Experience developing technical standards, processes and engineering best practice.
- Previous experience building and developing engineering teams.
Pay range and compensation package
Competitive salary and benefits package, dependent on experience.
