Role description

Due to our continued growth, we are now recruiting for a Principal Engineer - Air Intake System to be based at our office, Warwick.
Our Engineering Research and Development department (ER&D) is a fast-growing function within Tata Technologies Limited that is assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers. It comprises highly specialized engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery.
Role Summary
This role provides technical leadership and subject matter expertise in ICE, HEV and PHEV Air Intake Systems within customer vehicle programs. The incumbent will act as the Air Intake Systems SME, leading the design, development, integration, validation, and delivery of complete air induction systems for hybrid powertrain applications.
The role requires close collaboration with propulsion, calibration, NVH, thermal management, vehicle integration, manufacturing, and supplier teams to ensure air intake systems meet performance, efficiency, emissions, quality, cost, and timing targets throughout the product development lifecycle.
Dimension of Function
Responsible for acting as HEV / PHEV Air Intake Systems Module Lead and Technical SME within customer programs, providing specialist expertise in air induction system architecture, airflow management, acoustic performance, filtration systems, validation, and issue resolution.
Area of Responsibility
- Act as the technical lead and primary customer interface for HEV/PHEV air intake system activities.
- Lead engineering development of complete air intake systems including air cleaners, intake ducts, resonators, fresh air intake paths, charge air ducts, intake manifolds, and associated mounting systems.
- Lead intake system packaging and vehicle integration activities across multiple vehicle platforms.
- Drive design reviews, engineering sign-off activities, DFMEA, and technical maturity assessments.
- Collaborate with calibration teams to optimize airflow performance, combustion efficiency, and driveability characteristics.
- Support CFD, airflow analysis, pressure drop evaluations, and performance optimization studies.
- Lead NVH investigations and implementation of acoustic countermeasures to meet vehicle sound quality targets.
- Coordinate DVP&R activities including performance, durability, thermal, vibration, environmental, and water-ingestion validation.
- Lead root cause analysis and resolution of intake system issues identified during development, testing, launch, or production.
- Support supplier technical reviews and ensure component delivery meets quality, cost, timing, and performance requirements.
- Mentor onsite and offshore engineering teams and provide technical guidance on air intake system development.
- Support prototype vehicle builds, launch readiness activities, and production issue resolution.

Knowledge / Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace, Mechatronics, or related Engineering discipline.
- Minimum 10–12 years of automotive engineering experience with significant exposure to air intake or air induction system development.
- Strong knowledge of HEV and PHEV powertrain architectures and intake system requirements.
- Experience in design and development of air cleaners, induction ducts, resonators, intake manifolds, fresh air paths, and charge air systems.
- Strong understanding of airflow management, pressure loss, engine breathing, and induction system performance.
- Experience with air intake packaging and vehicle integration activities.
- Knowledge of intake system acoustics, sound quality, and NVH optimization techniques.
- Experience in requirements management and systems engineering processes.
- Proven experience in DFMEA, DVP&R, design reviews, and engineering sign-off processes.
- Understanding of thermal management impacts on intake system performance.
- Experience working with OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, and cross-functional engineering teams.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and root cause investigation skills.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience using CFD tools for airflow simulation and performance optimization.
- Knowledge of engine calibration requirements relating to intake system performance.
- Experience supporting APQP, PPAP, and production launch activities.
- Familiarity with emissions, OBD, and regulatory requirements affecting intake systems.
- Experience with durability, vibration, thermal ageing, water wading, dust ingestion, and environmental validation.
- Knowledge of Six Sigma, DMAIC, 8D, or structured problem-solving methodologies.
- Familiarity with CATIA V5/V6, Creo, Teamcenter, and engineering release processes.
