Principal Engineer - Civils and Structures

Principal Civil/Structural Engineer (London/Bristol) – Arcadis

About the Role

Arcadis has an enviable reputation for delivering the UK’s most prestigious and challenging projects, including:

  • Washwood Heath Depot (HS2)
  • Metrowest Phase 1b
  • CP7 Framework Projects

With a multi-sector approach, this role will offer opportunities across housing & development, local authority work, building structures, and education.

We are seeking to reinforce our Civil/Structural Engineering teams at all levels and appoint Principal Civil / Structural Engineers to support the expanding rail design team in our London and Bristol offices. You will lead the delivery of a diverse range of projects, from bridge replacements to multi-disciplinary station and depot projects across the region.

Key Role Accountabilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading interdisciplinary reviews of project deliverables on behalf of the engineering discipline.
  • Conducting verification checks on high-complexity elements.
  • Overseeing QA of analysis, design, and onsite survey coordination.
  • Developing and managing team performance, including subcontractors.
  • Resolving technical and commercial challenges and advising Project Directors and Managers to ensure project success.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Chartership with either the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).
  • Preference given to candidates nearing or holding Charteredercise (CRE), with mentoring provided if developing towards this.
  • Rail design experience strongly advantageous.
  • Proficiency in using engineering design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, STRAP, etc.), along with manual calculation methods.
  • Technical leadership experience, including mentoring project teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply sound engineering judgement in project development.
  • Strong understanding of design risk management.
