Principal Design Engineer (EHV Cables)
Murphy is recruiting for a Principal Design Engineer (EHV Cables) to work with our Applied Engineering team in Warrington.
Our engineering teams represent a multi-disciplined range of engineering skills, adding value across all our sectors and pushing the boundaries of digital construction, engineering innovation, and design to deliver intelligent, sustainable, and economical engineering solutions.
Under the banner of Murphy Applied Engineering, our in-house teams include civil, structural, mechanical, geotechnical, and process engineers. They design both permanent and temporary works for projects in all our locations and are a trusted source of expert advice for Murphy colleagues and external customers.
About the Role
Day in the Life
- Developing HV/EHV cabling systems specifications, concept/detailed design, and design review
- Performing estimation and site supervision/ support as required
- Providing technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design
- Preparing plant and equipment technical specifications, power cable route specifications, tender specifications, and technical/progress reports
- Ensuring correct and accurate interfaces with other engineering functions involved in the projects, attending and leading internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors
- Conducting technical calculations:
- Cable size and rating
- TMF and EMF calculations
- Sheath-induced voltage calculations
- Ensuring all project designs comply with:
- CDM regulations
- Relevant legislation
- Company procedures
- Ensuring designs contain sufficient and accurate information for construction
- Requesting missing information in a timely manner to maintain project schedules

Requirements
Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering
Experience & Skills
- Detail design experience in HV cabling projects
- Coordination of HV Cable Works design and interfaces throughout the project lifecycle, including:
- Development of drawings
- Executing calculations
- Understanding of commercial and technical issues in large-scale construction
- Ability and confidence to discuss engineering issues with people across various levels and disciplines
