Role description

At Tata Technologies we make product development dreams a reality by designing, engineering and validating the products of tomorrow for the world’s leading manufacturers. Due to our continued growth we are now recruiting for a Principal Engineer - Exhaust Systems to be based at our office in Warwick.

Our Engineering Research and Development department (ER&D) is a fast growing function within Tata Technologies Limited that is assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers. It comprises highly specialized engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery.

The Role

This role provides technical leadership and subject matter expertise in HEV and PHEV Exhaust Systems within customer vehicle programs. The incumbent will act as the Exhaust Systems Subject Matter Expert (SME), leading the design, development, integration, validation, and delivery of complete exhaust system solutions for hybrid powertrain applications.

The role requires close collaboration with vehicle integration, propulsion, calibration, NVH, thermal management, manufacturing, and supplier teams to ensure exhaust systems meet performance, emissions, durability, quality, cost, and timing targets throughout the product development lifecycle. Adapted from the original Module Lead structure.

Dimension of Function

Responsible for acting as HEV / PHEV Exhaust Technical SME within customer programs, providing specialist expertise in exhaust architecture, emissions compliance, thermal management, acoustic performance, validation, and issue resolution.

Area of Responsibility

  • Act as the technical lead and primary customer interface for HEV/PHEV exhaust system activities.
  • Lead engineering development of complete exhaust systems including manifold interfaces, front pipes, catalytic converters, GPF/DPF systems, mufflers, resonators, tailpipes, valves, heat shields, brackets, and mountings.
  • Ensure compliance with global emissions, noise, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead technical reviews, design maturity assessments, and engineering sign-off activities.
  • Drive DFMEA, DVP&R, Design Reviews, and risk mitigation activities.
  • Support thermal management studies, heat protection strategies, and underbody package integration.
  • Collaborate with propulsion and calibration teams to achieve emissions and driveability targets.
  • Lead technical investigations and root cause analysis for durability, NVH, thermal, emissions, and build issues.
  • Coordinate supplier technical activities and ensure delivery of components to quality, cost, and timing targets.
  • Support prototype build events, vehicle testing, launch activities, and production issue resolution.
  • Mentor and guide onsite and offshore engineering teams.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams including body, fuel systems, cooling systems, electrical, manufacturing, and quality teams.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace, or related Engineering discipline.
  • Strong automotive engineering experience with significant exposure to exhaust system development.
  • Strong knowledge of gasoline HEV and PHEV exhaust system architectures.
  • Experience in design and integration of catalytic converters, GPF systems, mufflers, resonators, tailpipes, exhaust valves, and associated hardware.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle emissions legislation and certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of exhaust thermal management and heat protection strategies.
  • Experience in hybrid vehicle operating modes and their impact on exhaust system performance.
  • Understanding of exhaust acoustics and NVH requirements.
  • Experience in requirements management and systems engineering processes.
  • Proven experience in DFMEA, DVP&R, design reviews, and sign-off processes.
  • Strong understanding of automotive product development processes and lifecycle management.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions with OEM customers and suppliers.
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause investigation capability.
  • Experience managing engineering delivery across multiple stakeholders and global teams.

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience with JLR, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Ford, Stellantis, or other OEM exhaust system programmes.
  • Experience with Euro 6d, Euro 7, China 6, EPA, CARB, and global emissions standards.
  • Knowledge of catalyst performance, emissions aftertreatment systems, and onboard diagnostics (OBD).
  • Experience with APQP, PPAP, and production launch activities.
  • Familiarity with durability, corrosion, thermal fatigue, and vibration validation requirements.
  • Experience supporting physical testing, rig testing, and vehicle development programmes.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, DMAIC, 8D, or other structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Familiarity with CATIA V5/V6, Teamcenter, Creo, and engineering release processes.
  • Experience leading global engineering work packages and supplier development activities.
