Principal Engineer
Principal Engineer – Cloud-Native Platforms (Python/Java)
About the Role
Lorien’s leading banking client is seeking a Principal Engineer to drive a next-generation cloud-native customer onboarding platform as part of a high-impact transformation programme. This role blends technical leadership, architecture expertise, and team mentorship to deliver a business-critical solution.
Ideal for senior engineers with experience in Financial Services (preferred), but also open to candidates with expertise from tech-driven start-ups, scale-ups, or complex engineering organisations specialising in cloud-native platforms.
Hybrid Working Model available: London-based with 2 days per week on-site. Remote work via Umbrella.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership across multiple engineering squads, enforcing engineering standards and best practices.
- Design and develop cloud-native microservices in Python and/or Java.
- Lead architecture and design for distributed, event-driven systems.
- Champion modern DevOps, CI/CD, IaC (Infrastructure as Code), and cloud engineering practices.
- Mentor ~10 junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and refine technical skills.
- Collaborate with architects, product owners, and stakeholders to ensure alignment and successful programme delivery.
- Drive production readiness through observability, resilience, resilience testing, and secure engineering practices.

Key Technical Skills & Experience
- Hands-on expertise as a Principal/Senior Engineer, Staff Engineer, or equivalent leadership role.
- Strong experience with:
- Python/Java for cloud-native application development.
- AWS, Docker, ECS/EKS (Kubernetes), and microservices architecture.
- Apache Kafka for event-driven systems.
- GitLab CI/CD, Terraform, IaC, and Continuous Delivery.
- Proven ability to:
- Establish and enforce engineering standards.
- Improve code quality and influence technical direction.
- Mentor, coach, and develop teams effectively.
