Job Description

Do you want to shape the technical future of HVDC projects and help deliver the grid systems that power a lower-carbon world?

GE Vernova is looking for an exceptional Principal Engineer - HVDC Systems Engineering to join our Electrification team based in Stafford, UK or Berlin, Germany.

GE Vernova - The Energy to Change the World

With over 130 years of experience and proven innovation, GE Vernova is leading a new era of energy. We are electrifying the world while working to decarbonize it. Our name reflects our mission. “GE” carries a legacy of quality and ingenuity. “Ver” signals Earth’s lush ecosystems, while “Nova” nods to a new era of lower-carbon energy we are helping to deliver.

Focused on the future, GE Vernova is accelerating the shift to reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy. We help customers power economies and deliver electricity vital to health, safety, and quality of life.

Electrification

Our Electrification solutions modernize grids, enable renewable integration, and strengthen energy systems. From software to power conversion and storage, we help create smarter, more resilient energy networks.

Let’s Talk About The Role

As Principal Engineer - HVDC Systems Engineering, you lead the development of safe, reliable, and commercially effective HVDC system solutions that help customers connect power, strengthen networks, and support the energy transition.

You take ownership of the overall technical solution for HVDC projects, translating customer requirements into integrated system designs, equipment specifications, engineering strategies, and technical decisions across the project lifecycle. You work closely with teams across engineering, technology, supply chain, and project delivery, while also representing GE Vernova with customers, suppliers, industry bodies, and academic partners. Alongside project work, you help improve the tools, standards, and processes that strengthen HVDC system engineering capability for the future.

How You Will Make a Difference

  • Leading the overall HVDC technical solution to meet customer requirements using reference solutions and sound engineering judgement
  • Developing integrated HVDC scheme designs by defining subsystem ratings, functionalities, and interfaces in an optimized and cost-effective way
  • Planning execution strategies with team leaders, supporting engineering estimates, and identifying risks, issues, and mitigation plans for new opportunities
  • Defining and maintaining technical specifications, guidance notes, and engineering standards for HVDC systems and high-value high-voltage equipment
  • Managing the lifecycle of key high-voltage equipment, including transformers, reactors, capacitors, instrument transformers, and surge arresters, from requirements and specification through supplier management, validation, testing, manufacturing, and commissioning
  • Delivering reliability, availability, and maintainability studies, as well as electrical losses modelling, to provide clear technical insight and support lifecycle decision-making
  • Providing expert technical input to design reviews, project proposals, customer negotiations, supplier audits, and cross-functional problem solving across manufacturing, supply, and field activities
  • Improving engineering tools, operational processes, systems, and technical solutions to enhance customer value, business efficiency, product introduction, cost performance, and schedule adherence
  • Representing GE Vernova externally with customers, suppliers, professional bodies, conferences, and academic institutions, while supporting innovation and intellectual property activities including patent evaluation
  • Mentoring engineers, supporting technical development and succession planning, and contributing to hiring and promotion discussions within the engineering community

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
