Job Description
As a Principal Engineer in the Product Safety Discipline, reporting to the Programme Product Safety team, you’ll lead hazard identification, risk analysis, and the formulation of the scheme of safety in collaboration with subsystem Technical Authorities. Your role involves creating robust safety case arguments underpinned by assurance evidence and technical artefacts—ensuring hazards are either eliminated or mitigated to the extent possible.
You’ll manage safety processes, guide colleagues, and act as a thought leader, influencing product integrity and safe design solutions.

Core Responsibilities
- Provide technical and consultative support to Technical Authority teams in managing hazards, risks, and mitigations across major subsystems or complex technologies.
- Develop and maintain the Hazard Log, verifying quality of submissions and assessing maturity of safety-related information.
- Organise and facilitate HAZard IDentification (HAZIDs) and safety review meetings, participating in others as required.
- Lead product safety activities for your allocated equipment area, delegating, managing, and overseeing junior engineers while maintaining technical oversight.
- Collaborate across multiple disciplines, ensuring technical integrity at every stage of the product lifecycle.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven knowledge of product safety processes, methodologies, and industry best practices.
- Experience spanning multiple phases of the Life Cycle Management (LCM) framework (e.g., assessment, design, manufacturing); understanding of through-life engineering.
- Familiarity with customer safety standards, including:
- DSA-02
- JSP430
- Def. Stan 00-56
- Mil-Std-882E
- BS EN 61508
