About the Role
- Location: Commutable from Newcastle / Middlesbrough (Hybrid)
- Top-up hours: 3 days in office
- Flexibilities: Flexible start/finish times / Early finish Friday
- Week length: 4-day work week possible
- Salary: £70,000 – £90,000
A well-established, R&D-led manufacturer of professional electronic instruments is seeking a senior engineer ready to take charge. You’ll shape the technical direction of cutting-edge hardware, leading a multidisciplinary team from initial concept to production—without losing touch with the details of embedded design.
This role is ideal for those who’ve mastered embedded systems development and are now poised to:
- Define product architecture and overarching strategy
- Lead cross-functional delivery
- Support real-world execution while pushing innovation forward
You’ll partner with Product Management to translate customer and market needs into actionable engineering plans, ensuring our instruments are robust, reliable, and deliverable.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead a multidisciplinary team (firmware, hardware, mechanical, and embedded software engineers) through all phases of product development:
- Concept → prototyping → production
- Own system architecture and technical direction, ensuring alignment between:
- Embedded firmware
- Hardware interfaces
- Mechanical design
- Software tooling
- Drive daily technical delivery, resolving dependencies and tackling complex challenges
- Stay hands-on in embedded development:
- Design
- Coding
- Debugging
- Validation cycles
- Collaborate with Project Managers to track schedules, risks, and progress against milestones
- Oversee system verification and validation, prioritising accuracy, robustness, and compliance (EMC, safety standards)
- Lead design transfer into manufacturing, including:
- Test fixture development
- Documentation
- Production ramp-up strategy
- Set the technical standard and mentor the engineering team

Key Requirements
Essential
- A degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline
- 10+ years’ experience in embedded systems development, ideally in:
- Precision instrumentation
- Measurement products
- Strong project completion track record—ownership of demonstrable product delivery
- Deep expertise in C/C++, with hands-on experience in:
- Microcontroller-based systems
- Real-time embedded development
- Comfortable with:
- Schematic capture
- PCB layout processes
- Electronics manufacturing workflows
- Experience working with Product Management to:
- Define features
- Balance trade-offs
- Iterate prototypes based on real feedback
- Familiarity with collaborative tools (Git, Azure DevOps, JIRA)
- Excellent communication and leadership skills across disciplines (software, hardware, mechanical)

- Hands-on experience with:
