ABOUT THE ROLE

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Engineer to play a pivotal role in delivering our Wastewater Capital Programme. This is a key technical leadership position where you will oversee feasibility and design for a range of wastewater treatment projects. You’ll provide expert guidance to the Waste Infrastructure Design Team, mentor team members, and support the Design Manager in developing technical capability across the team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as the technical authority, providing expert guidance and challenge across complex engineering decisions.
  • Lead the full design lifecycle, from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design and commissioning readiness.
  • Develop and assess innovative TOTEX solutions that balance cost, performance, carbon, and risk.
  • Identify, manage, and mitigate design risks, including health, safety, and environmental considerations, often acting under CDM regulations.
  • Ensure all designs comply with regulatory requirements, internal standards, and quality assurance processes.
  • Integrate multiple disciplines to deliver cohesive, system-wide engineering solutions.
  • Engage with clients, stakeholders, and supply chain partners to ensure alignment and successful outcomes.
  • Mentor and develop engineers, building technical capability and strengthening team performance.
  • Drive innovation by introducing new technologies, design approaches, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Oversee project delivery to ensure designs are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality and performance standards.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Extensive experience in the wastewater infrastructure sector.
  • Strong understanding of treatment processes (desirable).
  • Proven experience as Principal Designer and Designer under CDM regulations.
  • Expertise in civil design and specifications for wastewater infrastructure projects.
  • Track record of delivering innovative design solutions.
  • Full UK driving licence.
