About The Role
Are you an experienced environmental data analyst who enjoys turning complex datasets into meaningful insights? Are you confident leading projects, working directly with clients and applying advanced analytical techniques to solve real-world environmental challenges?
We're looking for a Principal Environmental Data Analyst to join APEM's growing Water Data Science team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role within one of the UK's most respected environmental data science teams, delivering innovative projects that support better environmental decision-making across the water, energy and environmental sectors.
Whilst our team has a strong heritage in freshwater science, we're keen to hear from experienced environmental data specialists from a range of disciplines. Whether your background is in freshwater ecology, marine science, terrestrial ecology, air quality, geospatial analysis or another environmental field, we're looking for someone who has extensive experience working with complex environmental datasets and enjoys applying robust statistical approaches to answer challenging questions.
This is a varied role combining technical excellence, project leadership and client engagement. You'll lead multidisciplinary consultancy projects, develop innovative analytical approaches using R, collaborate with environmental specialists across APEM, and help shape the future growth of our Water Data Science capability. As the team continues to expand, there will also be the opportunity to mentor and develop more junior colleagues.
What we're looking for
You'll need to bring:
- A BSc or MSc in a relevant scientific, environmental or quantitative discipline
- Significant experience managing, analysing and interpreting complex environmental datasets
- Advanced experience using R for statistical analysis, modelling and data visualisation
- Experience applying statistical and/or machine learning techniques to environmental data
- Proven experience leading and delivering projects to time, budget and quality standards
- Excellent report writing and technical communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills, with experience building relationships with clients, colleagues and multidisciplinary teams
- Experience preparing proposals and contributing to winning new work
- Excellent organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
