Principal Financial Planning & Reporting Analyst
Function: Finance & Trading
Location: Hybrid – within one of our offices (Nottingham, Alfreton, Wakefield, Daresbury or Sheffield)
Contract type: 6-months fixed term contract Salary: £56,476 Closing Date: Thursday 2nd July 2026
About the Role
NHS Supply Chain currently has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Financial Planning & Reporting Analyst to join during a period of transformation. This role will enable you to help the NHS prioritise patient care and achieve organisational objectives.
We are seeking an experienced Principal Finance Analyst who will lead a smaller team of analysts and deliver accurate financial forecasting, analysis, and reporting. You will collaborate closely with Finance Business Partners, Commercial, Procurement, and Operations teams, as well as external suppliers.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Acting as the senior escalation point for complex stakeholder or supplier queries
- Providing leadership coverage where required
- Driving continuous improvement across finance processes, systems, and outputs.
Daily Responsibilities

Team Leadership:
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of finance analysts
- Set priorities, allocate work, and ensure delivery of team objectives

Financial Insight & Decision-Making:
- Serve as the first point of escalation for complex stakeholder, customer, or supplier queries
- Provide high-quality financial insight to senior stakeholders, translating complex data into clear, actionable recommendations
- Support commercial decision-making and resolve complex queries through data-driven collaboration with commercial teams and suppliers

Provisional Leadership:
- Deputise for senior management as required

Financial Modelling & Scenario Analysis:
- Develop financial models and perform scenario analysis to support strategic planning, growth, and decision-making

Month-End & Income Recognition:
- Oversee month-end processes and ensure accurate income recognition
- Manage journals, reconciliations, and reporting on commercial income streams, such as rebates

Sales & Margin Analysis:
- Conduct detailed sales, margin, and rebate analyses, identifying key drivers, risks, and opportunities

Forecasting & Planning:
- Lead the coordination of financial forecasts, ensuring assumptions are clear, thoroughly challenged, and effectively communicated
- Support the production of the annual budget and wider financial planning processes

Business Performance & Continuous Improvement:
- Drive and support business-wide financial performance improvement initiatives
- Enhance financial planning and reporting processes, tools, and controls, ensuring strong governance, accuracy, and consistency across outputs

Skills and Qualifications Required
To excel in this role, you should possess the following:
- Proven experience in financial planning, forecasting, reporting, and commercial finance within a complex organisational structure
- Experience in leading, coaching, and developing teams
- Advanced analytical and financial modelling skills, with abilities to interpret complex datasets and create insightful outputs
- Experience with month-end processes including journals, reconciliations, and consolidated reporting
- Strong understanding of sales, margin, and income analysis
- Ability to influence and provide strategic financial advice to senior stakeholders
- Effective stakeholder management and business partnering skills across multiple functions
- Qualified accountancy designation (such as ACCA, CIMA, or ICAEW) or equivalent professional experience
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and MS Office
- Strong communication skills to present financial information clearly to non-finance audiences
- Proactive attitude and excellent organisational skills that enable effective time management and handling of competing priorities
- Continuous improvement mindset, with a focus on elevating accuracy, processes, and insight
