The Chelmsford site specialises in imaging sensors, used on some of humanity’s most important space imaging missions, including the Hubble Telescope, Kepler, Gaia, Mars Rovers, New Horizons, and Rosetta.
Teledyne e2v is expanding its Space Imaging portfolio, developing Front End Electronics (FEE) systems with:
- CMOS detector
- FPGA implementation (using VHDL)
- FPGA (design code in VHDL)
- Microprocessors (MCU)
These systems require high-reliability FPGA designs, including:
- Support for 5-year-plus space missions
- Operation within space-grade environments

Position Summary & Responsibilities
Teledyne e2v is seeking a contract Principal FPGA Engineer to join a multi-disciplinary team. The ideal candidate will:
- Develop deep operational knowledge of current and upcoming devices
- Write FPGA code and drive next-generation FEE designs for space applications
- Apply expertise in VHDL and Verilog using tools like Microchip Libero and Xilinx Vivado
The engineer will be responsible for end-to-end FPGA development, including:
- Design, verification, and maintenance
- Working closely with Embedded Software/Radio Frequency Engineers to architect solutions
- Collaborating with the wider FPLA IPv4/Electronics/Systems Team to meet critical mission needs
Essential Experience
- 3+ years of industrial FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) design in VHDL and Verilog
- Expertise in ASIC/VHDL/Verilog synthesis and FPGA programming
- Experience using Microchip Libero and Xilinx Vivado design environments
- Functional verification with self-checking test benches and simulation
- Timing verification through constraint-based design and silicon timing analysis
- Ability to estimate project tasks and define FPGA-based product delivery timings
- Experience authoring standards-compliant documentation, including:
- Requirements specifications
- Detailed design documents
- Technical reports
- Test specifications
- User manuals and work instructions
- Hands-on experience with:
- Oscilloscopes
- Logic analysers
- High-speed interfaces (100Mb, Gigabit)
- Evidence of professional certificates such as:
- FPGA Automation Technician+
- Xilinx Alliance Floating Point Engineer

Advantageous Skills and Experience
- Spaceflight/Aerospace/Defence experience with systems requiring equivalent low-ECC and high-reliability requirements
- Working knowledge of:
- ECSS (European Cooperation for Space Standards)
- Space environments
- SpaceWire serial protocols
- RMAP
- Image processing and handling expertise (13-bit per pixel high speed colour)
- Knowledge of:
- SVN Configuration Management
- AXI/AMBA interfaces
- Scripting and CI/CD pipeline automation
- Experience with:
- FPGA power optimisation and radiation environments
- UUID-based VHDL test benchmark methodology (UVVM)
