Our UK workforce of over 7,500 drives innovation in defence, space, aerospace, and digital security, shaping a trustworthy future. Thales partners with Government and international customers to deliver critical capabilities while delivering social impact through our technologies.
We are principal suppliers of UAS, EW (Electronic Warfare), and radar systems to the UK armed forces and global markets. Our Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) UK team thrives in a complex product development environment, delivering advanced technologies such as:

About the Role
We’re expanding our ISR team because of recent programme awards in Electronic Warfare, and we’re recruiting a Principal FPGA Engineer.

- Leading customers (external and internal) in firmware solutions.
- Holding responsibility for FPGA/Firmware development in complex systems.
- Balancing technical execution with stakeholder communication.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver firmware projects on time, within budget, and meeting quality standards.
- Lead firmware development, including:
- Design using Hardware Description Languages (HDLs).
- Verification via Hardware Verification Languages (HVLs) or hardware-description languages.
- Algorithm development (e.g., Matlab) for image/signal processing.
- Implement and enhance a culture of continuous improvement in firmware processes, including:
- process scripting, documentation, reporting, and automation.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams (electrical, software, hardware engineers).

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
