Principal Hydraulic Engineer – Opportunity with Stantec

The Opportunity

Join Stantec’s national Hydraulic Engineering team and take on a leadership role in delivering technically complex solutions across some of the UK’s largest regulated water frameworks. Collaborating with major water companies, you’ll provide specialist expertise to optimise the design, resilience, and long-term performance of critical infrastructure while shaping the future direction of hydraulic engineering within our business.

As a Principal Hydraulic Engineer, you’ll become part of a nationally recognised team celebrated for overcoming complex hydraulic challenges through technical excellence, innovation, and collaboration. You’ll work on influential infrastructure programmes, drive technical capability advancement, and reinforce Stantec’s reputation as a trusted engineering partner in the sector.


About The Role

As the Principal Hydraulic Engineer, you’ll take charge of high-stakes technical roles, guiding clients and cross-disciplinary teams with unmatched expertise.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the delivery and technical governance of advanced hydraulic studies
  • Provide expert advice on hydraulic structures, transient analysis, and engineering solutions
  • Review and validate complex technical outputs to uphold industry standards
  • Contribute to best-practice development within hydraulic engineering
  • Mentor engineers, strengthen client relationships, and support business growth
  • Help shape the future direction of Stantec’s hydraulic engineering capability

About You

We’re seeking an experienced Hydraulic Engineer who blends deep technical expertise with strong leadership and stakeholder management.

Requirements:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Significant experience delivering complex hydraulic engineering projects in the UK water sector
  • Advanced proficiency in fluid mechanics, hydraulic structures, and transient analysis
  • Hands-on experience with Hades, Varsim, Flow 3D, or comparable hydraulic modelling tools
  • Proven ability to lead technical teams and drive project outcomes
  • Exceptional client relationship management and communication skills
  • Experience ensuring technical rigor through quality reviews

Desirable (Not Mandatory):

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
  • Experience aligning with business development strategies and steering technical innovation
  • Mentorship opportunities to develop engineers within high-performing teams
