Principal Hydraulic Engineer – National Water Infrastructure
The Opportunity
Join Stantec’s national Hydraulic Engineering team and take a leading role in delivering technically complex solutions across some of the UK’s largest regulated water frameworks. Working with major water companies, you’ll provide specialist expertise to support the design, resilience, and long-term performance of critical infrastructure while shaping the future direction of hydraulic engineering within our business.
As a Principal Hydraulic Engineer, you’ll:
- Drive impactful projects across nationally significant programmes
- Develop technical capability across Stantec’s business
- Strengthen our reputation as a trusted engineering partner
About the Role
As a Principal Hydraulic Engineer, you’ll combine technical leadership with strategic influence—-acting as a trusted advisor to clients and multidisciplinary project teams. Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading the delivery and technical governance of advanced hydraulic studies
- Providing expert advice on hydraulic structures and transient analysis
- Reviewing complex engineering solutions
- Developing best practice within the field
- Mentoring engineers and strengthening client relationships
- Supporting business growth and shaping the future of our hydraulic engineering capability

About You
We’re seeking a seasoned Hydraulic Engineer who excels in technical leadership and stakeholder management.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- A degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
- Significant experience delivering complex hydraulic engineering projects within the UK water sector
- Advanced expertise in fluid mechanics, hydraulic structures, and transient analysis
- Extensive software experience, including HADES, VARISM, or FLOW-3D (or equivalent)
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams
- Strong client relationship management and communication skills
- Experience reviewing technical outputs and maintaining best practice in engineering standards
Desirable (But Not Essential)
- Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.) status
- Experience in business development and technical strategy
- Track record in mentoring engineers to develop capability
