Job Summary
The SFO is a unique law enforcement organisation which both investigates and prosecutes the most serious and complex cases of fraud, bribery and corruption. We focus on conduct which undermines confidence in the UK financial markets, compromises the level playing field that investors deserve, or has a particularly strong public interest dimension. We currently employ approximately 400 permanent staff including lawyers, investigators, accountants, digital forensic experts and administrators. We work closely with our colleagues across law enforcement and the wider criminal justice system, both at home and abroad.
This is an interesting and engaging role where you will be required to devise and lead an investigation into suspected serious and complex fraud or bribery and corruption effectively. This may include working towards a Deferred Prosecution Agreement.
Working with the Case Controller, you will be responsible for leading a team of investigators to investigate offences from inception to prosecution. The SFO is unique in the way we work within multi-disciplinary teams made up of other investigators, lawyers, accountants, IT experts and Counsel to bring cases to timely and successful conclusions.
You will work to support the Case Controller to deliver a highly effective investigatory function for the business. This is an important role and as an experienced investigator you will take responsibility for ensuring high profile cases are expedited.

As a Principal Investigator you will be responsible for:
- Leading high performing teams and delivering successful outcomes in a complex, multi-strand legal and investigative environment.
- Reporting to a Case Controller and working closely with investigative lawyer colleagues, planning, reviewing and delivering the investigative strategy for complex investigations, and where appropriate supporting any subsequent prosecutions.
- Ensuring investigations are kept under constant review and conducted in line with operational standards, monitoring progress and delegated budgets and adapting strategy as necessary and providing regular updates to case controllers and staff.
- Ensuring appropriate suspect and witness accounts are sought, obtained and strategically used, following relevant lines of inquiry.
- Producing key financial and investigation witness statements for SFO cases and giving evidence in court when required.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
