Background on the World Bank Group

The WBG Infrastructure Vice Presidency ensures the delivery of effective public-private solutions to address development challenges. Its mandate includes:

  • Creating jobs
  • Supporting infrastructure and human capital
  • Enhancing policy environments
  • Mobilizing private capital

This is a multi-duty-station role (Washington, DC or London) where the final location will depend on organizational needs.


Position Overview

The IFC Knowledge Bank’s Metals and Minerals Solutions and Impact (KIMSI) Team is seeking a Principal Investment Officer (PIO) to:

  • Develop and implement global metals and minerals sector strategy
  • Lead deal origination, structuring, and knowledge management
  • Cultivate client relationships and drive portfolio performance
  • Serve as a thought leader in private sector investments

Reporting to the Manager for Metals and Minerals - Solutions and Impact, this senior-level position will involve:

  • Global portfolio management
  • Client relationship oversight (select high-value international clients)
  • Team leadership and mentorship
  • Strategic representation of IFC’s sector-wide ambitions

Travel, including long-term assignments, is expected.


Responsibilities

Key duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with senior management, external stakeholders, and co-workers to enhance metals and minerals strategies.
  • Position IFC at the forefront of thought leadership and private capital mobilization in the sector.
  • Lead IFC’s strategic priorities, including:
    • Nurturing client relationships for key shareholders.
    • Developing replicable, innovative, and scalable projects and policies.
  • Drive knowledge sharing and infrastructure policies, aligning with WBG values, including:
    • Addressing environment/social standards integral to IFC’s operations.
    • Disseminating insights to bolster WBG business groups and private sector engagement.

Strategic Objectives

  • Advance future-oriented investment solutions across diverse sub-sectors.
  • Actively monitor industry dynamics and maintain industry relationships.
  • Direct a uplift co-resource team, fostering collaboration, mentoring, and performance accountability.

Selection Criteria

To be considered, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent) in finance, economics, or related fields.
  • Experience: At least 15+ years of substantial investment/private sector expertise, ideally specializing in:
    • Metals and Minerals
    • Client relationship management
    • Deal origination and execution

Experience must demonstrate:
  • Ability to craft and implement global sector strategies.

  • Proficiency across financial instruments, from project finance to quasi-equity investments.

  • Other Key Qualifications:

    • Proven adaptability to complex, fast-paced environments.
    • Capacity to navigate ethical dilemmas with integrity and judgment.
    • Leadership skills under pressure, ensuring diverse teams operate effectively.
    • Strong cross-cultural collaboration experience.
    • Demonstrated commitment to IFC’s sustainability agenda (e.g. IFC Performance Standards compliance).
  • Language:

    • Fluent English required.
    • Fluent Spanish/French is a significant advantage.
