Principal Land Consultant – WSP UK & Ireland Land Team

About the Role
WSP’s Land team is seeking a talented Principal Land Consultant to expand our largest and most successful team in the industry. This exciting role provides unparalleled opportunities to develop or launch a career on major infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland, encompassing:
- Land referencing
- Urban & rural landowner engagement
- Consultation management
- Land acquisition & access
- Formal consents & statutory orders
- Compensation agreements

Responsibilities
The Principal Land Consultant will:
- Deliver projects securely on time, within budget, and to high standards
- Act as a trusted advisor, managing internal and external client relationships
- Advise on land issues including statutory processes (e.g., DCOs, DNOs, hybrid Bills, Scottish Bills, TWA, T&CPA, CPOs, Motorway Orders)
- Secure land rights for high-profile infrastructure projects across all sectors
- Engage stakeholders, including landowners, legal teams, planning authorities, contractors, and clients
- Collaborate with surveyors, engineers, environmental, and planning teams
- Undertake quality assurance for land identification, negotiations, consents, and acquisition deliverables
- Share knowledge across regions and projects, fostering continuous improvement
- Lead a team by managing, motivating, and mentoring staff while contributing to business strategy
- Write bids and proposals for internal and external clients
- Deliver CPD-accredited training through the in-house Land Academy

Travel Requirement: UK-wide travel plus potential long-term travel to WSP’s Global Capability Centre in India.
Qualifications & Experience
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- Expertise in urban/rural land, property, communities, and stakeholder engagement
- Minus-(100) infrastructure experience with multi-disciplinary teams across sectors and locations
- Prior success in negotiating land rights, wayleaves, easements, and access agreements
- Ability to minimise land risks for clients across all project stages
- Track record in securing land orders, compensations, and statutory consents
- Strong negotiation and influencing skills, with excellent communication ability
- Adaptability and strong initiative – thrives under pressure while delivering high-quality outputs
- Effective landowner and public engagement experience
- Proficiency in IT and business systems with adherence to quality assurance standards
- Strong document management skills

Qualifications Preferred:
- A degree in Geography, Land/Estate Management, Agriculture, or related field
- Chartership or membership of a professional land/awarding bodies (advantageous)
Location Flexibility: The role is based in Leeds or Newcastle with hybrid working options. All candidates should be located in North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire (including Leeds), East Riding, County Durham, Teesside, Tyne and Wear, or North Lincolnshire for the best coverage.
