Principal / Lead Draughtsperson

To manage a small team of Engineering Draughtspersons to successfully deliver of a wide range of engineering drawing deliverables in accordance with company and industry specific standards.

Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities

  • Managing the production of high-quality Engineering Drawings across the team in accordance with company and Industry specific standards
  • Having responsibility for your Team’s Deliverables to the Design department including:
    • The satisfactory production of Wire Clearance Diagrams, RC detailing, Steelwork detailing, Feasibility Drawings, POC Layouts, Construction Site Layouts, Stage by Stage Diagrams, Condition Assessment Diagrams, Cable Route Layouts and Wood Pole GA/EDs to enable safe and secure solutions in accordance with Client specifications and CDM requirements
  • Provide Engineering CAD expertise:
    • For new project opportunities, tenders, project deliverables and timescales.
    • Advising and guiding Project Managers on likely deliverables, timescales and costs required
    • Advising the CAD Operations Manager on potential lead times.
    • Liaise with engineers to resolve project specific design issues
    • Measuring and assessment for feasibility/design suitability.
    • Managing workflow of the team to meet deadlines
  • Produce, and manage the team to produce, a wide range of CAD Drawings using different software including;
    • Microstation 2D/3D CAD:
      • Production of Scheme layout plans and OHL route plans.
      • Production of insulator set drawings from individual components.
      • Production of earthing diagrams from engineer’s sketches.
      • Production of stage-by-stage diagrams from scope documents.
      • Production of tower outline drawings for condition assessment.
      • Tower and Gantry Foundations.
      • Production of tower & gantry wire frame models from general arrangement drawings.
      • Production of wire clearance drawings – carry out electrical and safety clearance checks.
      • Creating 3D pole models – and associated GA drawings and Material lists.
      • Reinforced concrete.
      • Re bar schedules.
      • DCO drawings.
      • Substation layouts, cabling routes and cross sections.
    • Solid Edge 3D CAD:
      • Tower modelling from original GA drawings or site measurements
      • Production of new tower GA drawings, material/ bolt lists & piece small details.
      • Production of component drawings.
      • Compilation of drawing lists, Bills of Quantities and Line schedules for overhead line projects.
  • Quality
    • Checking all types of drawings as required
    • Undertake QA/QC checks across a broad range of engineering CAD deliverables and can self-check own work prior to approval stage
    • Carry out design assurance and drawing office QA/QC checks in accordance with client needs and LSTC quality procedures
    • Manage Drawing Files within the Document Management system and produce Document transmittals on occasion for document submission
  • Development and input into CAD systems and Best Practice Documents for the following areas:
    • Structural: (Improving existing systems, Exploring New Revenue Streams & expanding services).
    • Foundations & WCD: (Improving existing systems, Exploring New Revenue Streams & expanding services).
  • Input into the continued development of LSTC procedures, specifically related to Drawing Office work streams

People Management/Staff Development

  • Monitor and evaluate progress of others to build a high-performing team in which each member has a clear understanding of their responsibilities
  • Undertake Annual appraisals and monthly 1-2-1s to discuss progression, targets, recognition, and training requests
  • Provide guidance and training as appropriate, including the mentoring of your team
  • Be willing and able to share technical ability and knowledge to other members of the team in addition to enhancing your personal skill set

Additional responsibilities

  • Compiling and formatting reports
  • Collaborate with LSTC Engineers, Project Managers and CAD Staff on a regular basis to discuss engineering solutions and optioneering deliverables
  • Due to the nature of the business and the typically ongoing nature of projects, you will be expected to undertake additional duties outside the general description outlined above.

Qualifications

Qualifications and experience:

  • Ideally educated to A level standard (or equivalent) but must have at least 5 GCSE’s (Grades 9-4 (A-C) or equivalent) including English and Maths.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience in an Engineering/Civils environment
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant software (including Microstation Connect, SolidEdge, NX or Open Utilities Substation.
  • Up-to-date working knowledge of Industry specific standards and practices and applying relevant essential Health and Safety/CDM issues.

Key Attributes

  • Must be a flexible team player with the ability to schedule own work and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to support and mentor junior team members.
  • Ability to work/manage multiple projects or work streams concurrently.

General

  • Strong IT Skills
  • Excellent communication skills both within peer group and with external clients or interested parties.
  • Intuitive and able to problem solve whilst applying reason, logic and pragmatism
  • Able to contribute to the ideas of others to help deliver technical schemes that are safe, buildable and cost-effective
  • Effective interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Highly numerate
  • Excellent reporting skills
  • Ability to provide good sketches and notes of proposed solutions for development by others.

Personal Situation

  • Willing to undertake short excursions within the UK to meet clients and contractors as required and occasionally working unsocial hours
  • Willing to occasionally work at other LSTC or Client Offices
  • Ideally holding a valid UK Driving Licence (or licence acceptable to our insurers).
