Principal Marine Ornithologist
We are looking for a Principal Marine Ornithologist to join our team to help deliver impactful habitat compensation and monitoring plans for marine renewable energy projects and support in the delivery of ornithological assessments and guidance.
Our team values having an exceptional blend of robust academic skills combined with applied experience in working with developers and stakeholders. This has enabled us to deliver:
- Nine PhDs
- Over 40 research and guidance-based commissions
- Numerous offshore wind projects over the last 15 years
Responsibilities
The primary objective of this role is to work within our marine ornithology team to successfully deliver projects and guidance with significant environmental benefits. Core duties include:
- Preparation and delivery of compensation plans for offshore wind farm projects.
- Preparation and review of:
- Ornithological Assessments
- Habitats Regulations Assessments
- Technical reports
- Project management, coordination, and delivery of offshore ornithology projects.
- Preparing and coordinating tender submissions.
- Analysis of offshore wind farm impacts on protected seabird populations.
- Providing written and oral advice to clients, including participation in meetings with key stakeholders.
- Conducting ornithological fieldwork.
- Contributing to strategic ornithology projects undertaken by the team.
Requirements

- Strong experience and understanding of the environmental planning system, with expertise in producing ornithological impact assessments.
- Demonstrated experience and comprehension of:
- European Birds and Habitats Directives.
- Assessment methods related to European Designated sites.
- Knowledge of the ecology of European seabirds.
- Experience with ESAS (European Seabird At Sea Survey) and seabird colony count survey methodologies.
- A flexible and proactive approach to work.
- Comprehensive project management experience, including managing diverse workloads.
- Specialised skills in producing and reviewing high-quality reports, delivering them on time and to budget.
- Simulated collaboration with regulators and statutory advisors.
- Education at a higher degree level in ecology or a related field, or the ability to demonstrate equivalent expertise.
- Strong IT proficiency, including proficiency in Word and Excel.

While not essential, the following experience would be advantageous:
- Experience using key tools for impacts assessments of offshore wind farm projects on seabird populations, such as:
- Collision risk modelling.
- Spatial modelling.
- Apportioning.
- Displacement analysis.
- Population viability analysis.
- Conducting field surveys.
- Checking and analysing digital aerial survey data.
Location & Working Arrangement
The role is UK-based, with the option to work from one of our offices or remotely, supplemented by regular visits to the Glasgow office.
