Principal Marine Ornithologist
We are looking for a Principal Marine Ornithologist to join our team to help deliver impactful habitat compensation and monitoring plans for marine renewable energy projects and support in the delivery of ornithological assessments and guidance.
Our team values having an excellent mix of robust academic skills combined with applied experience of working with developers and stakeholders. This has enabled us to deliver nine PhDs, more than 40 research and guidance-based commissions and numerous offshore wind projects over the last 15 years.
The Role
If successful, you will be based in the UK—either from one of our offices or homeworking with regular visits to our Glasgow office. The overall objective of your role will be to:
- Work as part of our marine ornithology team to successfully deliver projects and guidance with important environmental benefits
- Prepare and deliver compensation plans for offshore wind farms
- Prepare and review Ornithological Assessments, Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs), and technical reports
- Manage, coordinate, and deliver offshore ornithology projects
- Prepare and coordinate tender submissions
- Conduct analysis of wind farm impacts on protected seabird populations
- Provide written and oral advice to clients, including meetings with key stakeholders
- Undertake ornithological fieldwork
- Contribute to strategic ornithology projects led by the marine ornithology team

About You
We’re seeking an experienced professional who demonstrates:
Essential Requirements
- Strong expertise in environmental planning for ornithological impact assessments
- Deep understanding of the European Birds and Habitats Directives, including methodologies for assessments related to Designated Sites
- Knowledge of European seabird ecology
- Experience with ESAS and seabird colony count surveys
- Flexibility and proactive approach in project delivery
- Comprehensive project management experience with high workloads
- Ability to produce and review high-quality reports on schedule and budget
- Strong relationships with regulators and statutory advisors
- Higher degree education in ecology (or equivalent experience)
- Strong IT skills, including Word and Excel

Desirable (Bonus)
- Experience with:
- Risk modelling, spatial modelling, apportioning, displacement analysis, and population viability analysis for wind farms
- Field surveys, particularly seabird-focused
- Analysing digital aerial survey data
