Job Description - Principal Mechanical Engineer

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to join a high-performing engineering team developing advanced electromechanical products for the automotive sector. This is a senior technical position responsible for leading complex mechanical design activities throughout the product development lifecycle.

The successful candidate will be an experienced and self-motivated engineer capable of independently solving challenging engineering problems while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams including systems, electronics, software, manufacturing, quality, and programme management. This role also provides technical leadership and mentoring to other engineers, promoting engineering excellence and best practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design and development of complex automotive components and assemblies from concept through production.
  • Create robust 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks, applying advanced GD&T principles.
  • Perform engineering calculations including:
    • Tolerance stack analysis
    • Press and interference fit calculations
    • Thermal expansion (CTE) assessments
    • O-ring and sealing calculations
    • Basic stress and structural approximations
  • Conduct finite element analysis (FEA) using SolidWorks Simulation and/or Ansys to validate designs against functional load cases.
  • Support Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews with suppliers and manufacturing teams.
  • Participate in Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) activities.
  • Support structured problem-solving activities using 8D or equivalent methodologies.
  • Present design concepts, technical analyses, and engineering recommendations to internal stakeholders, suppliers, and customers.
  • Collaborate effectively within cross-functional engineering teams while maintaining ownership of individual workstreams.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering standards, processes, and best practices.
  • Manage assigned engineering activities, ensuring projects are delivered on schedule and to the required quality standards.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
