Principal Mechanical Engineer Building Services
Senior (Principal/Associate) Mechanical Designer
About the Role and Company
A very reputable large multidisciplinary engineering consultancy with multiple offices throughout the UK.
- Engaged in diverse projects across Healthcare, Education, Commercial, Mixed-Use, and more
- Senior management delivers high technical expertise with clear career development and progression plans

- Looking for an experienced Mechanical Designer at Principal or (considering) associate level
Key Responsibilities

Project Interpretation & Design
- Ensure deep understanding of project briefs
- Conduct design and specification of all Mechanical Building Services systems
- Prepare and review documentation including designs, specifications, technical reports (e.g., survey reports, assessment reports)

Technical & Administrative Work
- Lead and manage team members in producing detailed calculations, studies, and analyses
- Use industry standard software: CAD, Excel, IES (thermal modelling), in-house developed tools
- Perform fieldwork including site surveys, inspections, and monitoring of works
- Conduct detailed surveys of mechanical services and equipment to assess existing installations
- Propose new/upgrade design solutions based on findings
- Lead and manage team members in producing detailed calculations, studies, and analyses

- Reporting & Mentorship
- Write professional technical reports and notes
- Assist junior engineers in skill development and project contributions
Requirements & Qualifications
Education & Certification
- Degree-qualified or equivalent in:
- Building Services Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Preferably chartered or working towards chartership with:
- CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers)
- IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology)
Experience & Technical Skills
- 5–10 years’ experience in design consultancy or comparable environment
- Expertise in mechanical design within the built environment
- Report writing & stakeholder engagement
- Ability to develop professional reports and presentations for clients
- Attend and contribute to client meetings

Decision-Making & Technical Competencies
- In-depth knowledge of enforceable technical standards
- Strong autonomy and initiative for project deliverables
- Ability to make decisions independently and meet deadlines
Software Proficiency
- Proficient in digital tools, including:
- IEUES (thermal modelling)
- Microsoft (Excel, PowerPoint etc.)
- CAD (building services and mechanical design)
