Principal Mechanical Engineer
Job Title: Principal Mechanical Engineer Recruitment Partner: FJA (Finlay Jude Associates Ltd)
About the Role
FJA are recruiting on behalf of a leading service provider in the wastewater industry for an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to strengthen their team.

Key Responsibilities
The Principal Mechanical Engineer will fulfill the following critical roles:
- Report to Design Managers, Technical Discipline Lead, Regional Discipline Lead, and Engineering Manager
- Develop complex, cost-effective mechanical design layouts that meet specifications and can be efficiently constructed and commissioned
- Prepare, review and verify all design deliverables, including:
- Specifications
- Schedules
- Drawings
- Calculations
- Collaborate across disciplines to create comprehensive 3D site and plant models
- Ensure timely delivery of all design-stage outputs within budget
- Coordinate technical deliverables to maintain consistency and alignment across disciplines
- Provide estimates and technical input to the Proposals team as needed
- Strengthen working relationships with construction and supply chain teams to optimise buildability
- Adhere to and improve departmental procedures and processes
- Assist in creating, reviewing and updating departmental policies and best practices
- Maintain accurate documentation and records throughout projects
- Promote customer satisfaction by adopting a customer-focused approach
- Lead Operability and Maintenance Workshops with clients to ensure designs meet operational and maintenance needs
- Develop and maintain a personalised professional development plan
- Mentor and supervise team members while fostering their growth
- Ensure designs incorporate environmental considerations
- Fully comply with CDM 2015 Regulations and relevant health and safety obligations

Key Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate the following qualifications and experience:
- Extensive expertise in core engineering principles, including:
- Structural design
- Materials science
- Hydraulics
- Environmental engineering
- Proven experience in project leadership, including:
- Managing design teams
- Delivering water and wastewater treatment plant projects
- Chartered status (or progression to chartered status) with a relevant body such as CIWEM
- A recognised degree in engineering or a closely related discipline
- Ability to rationalise design concepts for cost-efficient plant layouts
- Broad expertise in mechanical, process, and electrical engineering, supplemented by project management experience in water treatment
- Comprehensive knowledge of CDM 2015 regulations, including roles, responsibilities and compliance
- Familiarity with industry and regulatory frameworks, including:
- BS standards
- WIMES
- BSRIA
- HSE requirements
- Water quality regulations
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex technical data
- Proficiency in relevant engineering software and digital tools
- Full UK driving licence
