The Opportunity

THE OPPORTUNITY

The UK water sector is undergoing its most significant period of investment in decades, and Stantec is helping deliver the infrastructure that will improve water security, protect the environment and create more resilient communities. As AMP8 progresses, we're looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our growing Water team in the South.

This is an exciting opportunity to take a leading technical role within one of the UK's foremost multidisciplinary water consultancies. You'll work on a diverse portfolio of major infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects, collaborating with industry-leading specialists to deliver innovative mechanical engineering solutions for water and wastewater treatment, pumping stations and conveyance systems. With a strong pipeline of work, investment in digital engineering and a collaborative team culture, you'll have the opportunity to further develop your career while making a tangible difference to the communities we serve.

About The Role

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the technical delivery of mechanical engineering projects across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design, construction support and commissioning. You'll work closely with multidisciplinary teams, project managers, clients, contractors and supply chain partners to develop practical, sustainable engineering solutions that deliver outstanding project outcomes.

You'll provide technical leadership across water and wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations and mechanical process systems, ensuring engineering quality, technical governance and best practice are maintained throughout project delivery. Alongside your project responsibilities, you'll mentor and support developing engineers, helping to build capability across the team while contributing to project planning, client engagement and business growth.

YOUR IMPACT

Your expertise will help deliver the infrastructure that enables communities to access safe, reliable water services while supporting the industry's ambitious environmental and sustainability goals. Through innovative mechanical design, you'll contribute to projects that improve treatment processes, enhance operational efficiency and increase the resilience of critical water infrastructure.

You'll also play an important role in developing the next generation of engineers, sharing your technical knowledge and fostering a collaborative culture that drives engineering excellence. Your contribution will strengthen client relationships, support successful project delivery and reinforce Stantec's reputation as one of the UK's leading engineering consultancies.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
