About the Role: Become Part of Scotland’s Water Transformation
Our Water Team in Scotland is at the forefront of a multi-decade, multi-billion-pound infrastructure revolution, including Scottish Water’s SR27 Enterprise—the highest-value programme ever for the nation. **AECOM has been appointed as a Preferred Bidder for Primary Design expertise, shaping water and wastewater systems for the next 26 years.
As Principal Mechanical Engineer, you’ll:
- Lead mechanical design excellence on transformational projects
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams and national partners to deliver net-zero-aligned solutions
- Foster innovation and vocational leadership for mechanical graduates, engineers, and junior professionals

Key Responsibilities: Drive Impact at Scale
Your role will span strategy, design, and output delivery:
Design & Technical Leadership
- Develop feasibility studies, plant layouts, WIMES data sheets, and mechanical specifications for water and wastewater treatment plants (WwTW), water treatment works (WTW), and infrastructure projects.
- Prepare P&IDs, valve schedules, equipment lists, lifting strategies, and hydraulic calculations.
- Lead design reviews (HAZOP, HAZID, ALMs) and SWIFTS workshops to ensure compliance and technical robustness.

Project & Team Leadership
- Act as Mechanical Lead, coordinating with Civil, Electrical, Process, and SE teams to align design goals.
- Set realistic programmes and budgets, maintaining alignment within strict project timelines.
- Mentor graduates and senior engineers as Line Manager, cultivating technical and leadership talent.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Engage directly with clients, contractors, and suppliers via site visits and technical reviews.
- Collaborate with Scottish Water and Enterprise Partners to directly influence social and environmental outcomes.

Qualifications & Skills: Be Bold
We’re looking for candidates with:
Must-Haves
✅ A degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering ✅ Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a recognised UK institution (e.g., IMechE) ✅ 5+ years of practice-specific relevant experience in design and technical reviews for water or wastewater projects ✅ Excellent technical communication— παράδοξως through drawings, reports, specifications ✅ Track record of driving design value, risk assessment, and delivery precision for water-related infrastructure
Nice-to-Haves
🔹 Consultancy experience with Scottish Water, Utilities, or Public Sector clients 🔹 Experience managing suppliers, contractors and large-scale contractors—with proven sourcing success
