Principal Platform Engineer – bp (IT&S Group)
About the Role
The Principal Platform Engineer is a senior individual contributor role focused on defining the strategy and architecture for how bp’s portfolio of engineering and data platforms connect, converge, and serve the business.
Positioned at the intersection of platform engineering and enterprise architecture, this role provides technical leadership and strategic direction without direct line management. The Principal Platform Engineer is responsible for:
- Ensuring a coherent, scalable, and well-governed platform landscape
- Integrating internal engineering platforms, cloud-native infrastructure, and enterprise SaaS solutions
- Acting as the technical authority on platform integration and convergence
The role demands organisation-wide influence, with the successful candidate collaborating across engineering, delivery teams, and external partners in a multi-platform environment.
Key Accountabilities

Define and maintain a platform convergence strategy, including:
- Current-state landscape assessment
- Target architecture design
- Transition roadmap for seamless integration of bp’s engineering platforms and SaaS solutions

Lead architectural design at the intersection of internal platforms and enterprise SaaS, establishing:
- Integration patterns
- Data contracts
- Governance standards across the platform estate

Provide expert guidance to engineering teams and stakeholders on:
- Platform design
- Cloud-native patterns
- Systems integration

Resolve complex cross-platform challenges, including:
- Identity and access management
- Data flow and event-driven architecture
- API design with constraints on durability, security, and compliance

- Reference architectures
- Decision records accessible to both engineering and executive stakeholders

Collaborate with AI engineering, vendors, and partners to ensure platform decisions enable AI and business capabilities without unnecessary constraints.
What You Will Bring
Essential Criteria
- Extensive experience in platform engineering, particularly:
- Kubernetes and cloud-native environments
- Large-scale multi-component platform estates
- Proven enterprise architecture capability, including:
- Experience defining target-state architecture strategies
- Navigating complex system landscapes (internal platforms + third-party SaaS)
- Deep knowledge of cloud-native patterns, including:
- Containerisation and orchestration
- Service mesh
- API gateway design
- Event streaming
- Infrastructure-as-code
- Track record integrating enterprise SaaS (ERP/business platforms) with:
- API integration strategies
- Identity management patterns
- Data integration models
- Experience operating as a senior technical authority in a large organisation, influencing:
- Architecture and engineering decisions
- Cross-platform collaboration (no direct reporting required)
- Strong communication skills, capable of explaining complex concepts to:
- Technical peers
- Delivery teams
- Executive stakeholders
- Relevant education or equivalent experience, including:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field
- Familiarity with regulatory and compliance aspects (data residency, audit logging, security controls) in enterprise platform design.

Desirable Criteria
- Experience with enterprise data platform architectures, including:
- Data mesh, data fabric, or data lakehouse patterns
- ** prior exposure to AI/ML infrastructure and MLOps integration**
- Experience engaging with software vendors and system integrators (platform alignment)
- Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Architect).

Location & Work Arrangements
- Campus Move: Initially based at Sunbury, transitioning to Southwark, London in 2027.
- Travel Requirement: Negligible travel expected.
- Work Arrangement: Hybrid (office/remote).
