About the Role
You’ll be part of AECOM’s growing Principal Process Engineer team in the UK’s nuclear sector. This leadership role allows you to engage in diverse projects throughout their lifecycle, from consultancy to full engineering solutions. You’ll ensure projects align with quality, safety, and environmental standards while collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
AECOM’s multiDisciplinary Nuclear SQEP team has delivered excellence in the nuclear sector for over 50 years. We tackle unique challenges with rigorous safety standards and sustainable practices. Our focus spans decommissioning, innovation in energy production, and securing the UK’s nuclear future for generations.

Key Responsibilities
Core Process Engineering
• Lead and review process engineering deliverables with full accountability, including:
- Process Descriptions
- Basis of Design & Process Flow Diagrams
- Process & Instrumentation Diagrams
- Detailed process calculations, schedules, and data sheets
- Material and enthalpy balances • Develop and delegate deliverables for project deadlines. • Ensure designs meet project scope, safety regulations, and health/safety standards. • Apply Safety in Design principles consistently.

Project Leadership
• Manage project programs, team workloads, and interoffice communications. • Integrate process design with civil, mechanical, electrical teams to ensure cohesive project delivery. • Monitor design development in meetings and produce reporting documentation.
Team Growth & Collaboration
• Develop the Process Team through training, mentoring, and peer reviews. • Assist with recruitment activities and identify incoming work opportunities.
Sustainable & Regulatory Compliance
• Support the Integrated Safety Case development for nuclear projects. • Guarantee fit-for-purpose judgments in problem-solving. • Manage contractors and build partnerships with delivery firms.
Continuous Learning
• Monitor technical and commercial nuclear industry trends.
Requirements
Experience & Expertise
- Chartered Member (CEng) granted or waiting with Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) or equivalent authority.
- 10+ years’ modern experience as a Process Engineer—preferably in nuclear design.
- Advanced autonomy and safety-compliant leadership in codes & regulations.
- Subject Matter Expertise (SME) in:
- Health and Safety framework/application
- Project delivery and process engineering bid proposals
- Team leadership & mentoring
- Proficiency in contract management (preferably NEC Construction Operations) as well as nuclear-specific regulations and standards.
- Technical familiarity with Piping and Instrument Design Standards (ASME, ISO EN, EN).
Competencies
• High-level multiTasking, clear communication, and client engagement skills. • Security clearance eligibility (UK clearance required for this role). • Full UK driving license.

• Employment is conditional to meeting UK security clearance requirements for AECOM projects. • All new hires must attend in-Person onboarding for Day 1 security and compliance processes.
