Principal Process Engineer – Nuclear Industrial Roles

About the Role

Join AECOM’s established and expanding Nuclear team, leading multi-disciplinary projects—from client consultancy to comprehensive engineering design solutions. This role combines client interaction, bid development, and project delivery, ensuring high standards in quality, safety, and environmental care.

We are the UK’s trusted nuclear consultancy, specialising in design, decommissioning, and industrial applications for nearly 50 years. This includes:

  • Safety-critical design and risk management in a regulated sector
  • Sustainable delivery and social value integration
  • Collaboration with Transmission Network Operators (TNOs), Decommissioning Partners, and Waste Managers across the nuclear fuel cycle
  • Supporting the UK’s transition to Net Zero with sustainable small and large modular reactors (SMRs & LMRs)

Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Review & Approve Deliverables
    • Process Descriptions, Basis of Design
    • Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
    • Process & Instrument Data Sheets & Schedules, Underpinning Design Calculations
    • Material and Enthalpy Balances, Design Justification Reports

  • Lead Process Design & Delivery

    • Oversee project from concept to implementation
    • Ensure solutions align with requirements, scope, and regulations (e.g., Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, NHS, ONR, HSE)
    • Integrate Safety in Design principles
    • Develop and manage project programmes, workloads, and multidisciplinary coordination
    • Drive pragmatic problem-solving and “fit-for-purpose” engineering judgment
  • Collaborate & Compliance

    • Represent engineering expertise in meetings and stakeholder communications
    • Coach and mentor engineers to grow team capability
    • Design accountability under CDM 2015 regulations
    • Support licensing safety case substantiation
  • Contract & Growth Management

    • Identify recruitment opportunities, support bids
    • Manage Nuclear Exploiter Clients (merchant reactors, TNOs, & Government)
    • Stay updated with industry codes (APC, SANA, UK EMSR), EPC, and NEC contracts

Requirements

Qualifications & Expertise

  • Chartered IChemE membership (or equivalent professional status)
  • 10+ years’ experience as a Process Engineer (or Chemical/Petrochemical diversified engineer) in UK Nuclear, Industrial Civil Infrastructure, or Space/Petrochemical
  • Personnel protection, radiation safety, and decommissioning engineering experience preferred

Critical Skills

✅ Health & Safety – On-site licencing/decision making experience ✅ Process Engineering Leadership – Managed bids, projects, or teams ✅ Regulatory Knowledge – Familiarity with Nuclear Industry Safety Rules, NEC contracts, and nuclear decommissioning standards ✅ Technical Cooperation – Delivered design deliverables in multidisciplinary environments
