Principal Process Engineer
Engineering Manager / Principal Process Engineer – Water Birmingham Full-Time / Hybrid
About the Role: We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager / Principal Process Engineer to join our growing Water Design team in Birmingham. This is a senior technical leadership opportunity for an accomplished process engineer with strong expertise in water and wastewater treatment process design, optimisation, and multidisciplinary project delivery.
The successful candidate will lead process engineering activities across a portfolio of municipal water and wastewater projects, including treatment plants, sludge treatment facilities, pumping stations, and associated infrastructure schemes. You will play a key role in technical leadership, client engagement, team development, and successful project delivery from concept through commissioning.
This role is ideal for a motivated engineering professional looking to influence major infrastructure projects while supporting the continued growth of a high-performing engineering team.
Key Responsibilities: Process Engineering Leadership Lead and deliver process engineering design across all project phases, from feasibility and concept design through to detailed design, commissioning, and operational support Provide technical leadership in the design and optimisation of water and wastewater treatment processes Develop and review: Process calculations Mass balances Hydraulic calculations Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) P&IDs Technical specifications Lead process modelling and simulation activities using software such as SUMO, BioWin, GPS-X, InfoWorks, HADES, or equivalent Oversee process equipment selection and specification including pumps, blowers, screens, filters, and dosing systems Conduct process optimisation studies to improve operational efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and enhance performance Ensure designs comply with client requirements, environmental regulations, industry standards, and Health & Safety legislation Provide technical assurance and peer review across multidisciplinary design teams Support commissioning, troubleshooting, start-up, and process performance testing activities where required

Engineering Management & Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop process engineers and multidisciplinary design teams Provide line management, technical guidance, and professional development support to junior and intermediate engineers Promote technical excellence, innovation, and knowledge sharing within the team Coordinate process engineering inputs with Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, ICA, and BIM/CAD disciplines Manage engineering resources, priorities, and workloads across multiple concurrent projects

Project & Client Management: Manage project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and technical risks Act as the primary process engineering point of contact for clients, contractors, suppliers, and regulatory stakeholders Lead and participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, workshops, progress meetings, and stakeholder engagement sessions Support business development activities including proposals, bids, framework submissions, and client presentations Contribute to strategic growth initiatives within the Water division and support the expansion of process engineering capabilities
